The Pixel 6 has had issues with its under-display fingerprint scanner. Thus, Google released a tool to recalibrate the Pixel 6’s fingerprint scanner if it’s being repaired. However, according to 9To5Google, the fingerprint scanner calibration tool has been having issues of its own.
The Fingerprint scanner calibration tool has been having some issues
The Google Pixel 6 represented a lot of firsts for the company: first Android 12 device, first Pixel with a 50MP camera, first Pixel with a radically new design, and first Pixel with an under-display fingerprint scanner. Consequently, it’s had some serious growing pains.
One of the main issues was with the under-display fingerprint sensor. Users reported having issues with the sensor being extremely slow, not recognizing their fingers, or recognizing unregistered fingers. Google launched a fingerprint scanner calibration tool to aid people doing repairs on the sensor.
However, even the calibration tool itself is not working properly. When people try to use the calibration tool, it would not even get past the first step of calibration. The tool will go through three steps of calibration: downloading specific software, installing that software, and restarting the phone.
People have reported that the fingerprint scanner calibration tool wouldn’t even be able to download the software. They will get a message that reads “Couldn’t find the unique calibration software for this device.”
There may possibly be a workaround for this
One Reddit user posted that they were able to get the tool up and running. They said that they are a Google certified technician (though we’re taking that was a grain of salt) and that problem might be with windows. The user then said that they were able to get the software running by using a Pixel 5 and a Chromebook.
We’re not sure what Google is going to do next
Google has not responded to this news just yet. Either the company is working on the solution, or it’s unaware of it altogether. Regardless, this is not a good look for Google. The Pixel 6’s fingerprint scanner has been plagued with multiple issues throughout its short lifespan.
There were reports of it being extremely slow. Google said that this is because of advanced AI algorithms at work. Also, people reported that the fingerprint scanner would stop working altogether when the phone ran out of battery.
Other users said that they were even able to have their device unlocked by using an unregistered fingerprint. These are all pretty bad scenarios, and we’re hoping that Google can fix this issue on the Pixel 6, and have it not occur on the Pixel 7.
