The official trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is here. One of the most anticipated movies on this year’s slate, the sequel is set to hit the big screen in May. Ahead of the premiere, Marvel Studios dropped a new trailer for the movie during the Super Bowl, and you can watch the full version of the official trailer below.
There’s a lot to unpack in this trailer that might require multiple viewings, with perhaps the biggest takeaway that we can hear Patrick Stewart’s Professor X voice, seemingly confirming his rumored involvement. The official synopsis reads: “In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.”
Sam Raimi directs the sequel using a screenplay by Jade Halley Bartlett and Michael Waldron. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Doctor with Elizabeth Olsen with the cast also including Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Micahel Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers.
Can Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Match Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Multiverse Madness?
Benedict Cumberbatch can currently be seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home, one of the most popular and successful superhero movies of all time. The acclaimed film is celebrated for the way it brought in characters from other worlds, allowing three different Spider-Men to share the screen at one time. It was an amazing moment that also opened the door for a world of possibilities. If the multiverse is further explored in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel might be wanting to go big to follow No Way Home, though Cumberbatch has admitted he’s worried that the film won’t live up to the first Doctor Strange.
“I’ve got the Second Album Fear with this one, like anyone should, because the first one was such a riotous success and he’s become a much-loved character,” the actor told Esquire, hoping thi. “They’re very good at exceeding expectations, when expectations are low. I think it’s always harder to exceed them when they’re high. I’m not saying they make them low. ‘We’re going to do Ant-Man!’ It’s just the way they make these things work. On paper you think ‘Is that exciting?’ They’re starting to take more risks now, I think. I mean, their directors are very tied into the house style. But, you know, Taika Waititi, they were, like, ‘Are we…? Is this going to work?’ And it’s f—ing so funny, Thor: Ragnarok.”
The new trailer holds back on revealing too many other major surprises, leaving it up to the imagination which characters we might be seeing in the film. Let’s keep in mind that Marvel and Sony held back on officially revealing Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home until well after the movie’s release. We can presume they’re going to keep Doctor Strange 2‘s biggest surprises under lock and key as well.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2022.
