Britain already holds Harry responsible for “cursing” her.

Even though King Charles wears the crown and is known as the monarch of Britain, it is now common knowledge that Prince William holds a lot of power, more than his father in many matters, power that will only multiply once he becomes the king. But even with all this power, he will be unable to change his daughter, Princess Charlotte’s, fate. Not that it’s stopping him from trying.

While Britain – and frankly, the rest of the world – is currently stuck on the rapidly unfolding drama that is Prince Harry’s finally losing his patience with the Royal family, what we are forgetting is that no matter how much the duke fights, he is the past. And despite his alleged grievances with William, his brother is the future of the nation.

It will be William’s son George who will take up the mantle of the monarch after him, leaving Charlotte to be the “spare” – a term that has taken on a depressive, terrifying meaning in wake of Harry’s revelation as being the “spare” to his brother and how he was never more than the backup in case something happened to Willy.

Is that the future that awaits young Charlotte? Will she also feel alienated from her family, made to feel less than George, sidelined because only the king deserves the spotlight? Even if she doesn’t take up the path Harry did to rebel against the system, she will still know that she will always come after George, that no matter how much she contributes to the Royal family, she will always be no. 2.

While William could not – or was not willing to – make life easy and the burden of being second lighter for Harry, he is striving to do that for Charlotte. In a chat with People, royal biographer Robert Hardman claimed that one of the most important duties for William is not just to get ready to be the king, but also to “make the whole royal existence approachable and not scary for all his children.”

It remains to be seen how successful William is in his endeavour, whether he is cursed to repeat the mistakes of his father or be like the late Queen Elizabeth, who understood the “extraordinary and challenging role of the No. 2.”

“That’s why she had a particular soft spot for [her sister] Margaret, for [her son] Andrew and Harry. She understood being second place in a strictly hierarchical family and institution has its challenges.”

Was William this aware when Harry was facing the issues he wants Charlotte to never face? Is his newfound desperation to shield his daughter a result of his alleged inability to be a good brother?

Harry has expressed concern for both Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis in his book, the controversial Spare, wherein he acknowledges the challenges they might face since they are in a similar position within the royal hierarchy. He has indicated a sense of responsibility toward them, hoping they won’t face the same struggles he did, prompting many trolls to call him out for “cursing” his niece with his fate and for projecting his own struggles onto children whose lives may not mirror his.
