A couple of days ago, a report surfaced, claiming that Material You theming will become mandatory for Android 12 devices. Well, an official confirmation basically arrived soon after that. Material You theming is coming to Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and smartphones from other brands.
Material You launched with the Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro devices. Since then, it spread to the company’s other phones which received Android 12 update. Material You dynamic color theming is looking to spread its wings, though.
Material You theming is coming to Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi & other Android devices
Google actually confirmed this, and it used some phones as an example. If you take a look at the image below, you’ll see the Galaxy S22, OnePlus 9 Pro, OPPO Find X3 Pro, Vivo IQOO 7 Legend, and Xiaomi 11 with Material You in action. Gmail is the example here.
Do note that the change doesn’t seem to be coming with Android 13, though. It is rumored that third-party Android 12 builds with Google Mobile Services built-in will need to support dynamic color theming starting March 14.
If this is the case, that would mean that OEMs have been working on this for a long time. Google probably let everyone know that the change is coming, so that companies can prepare.
Implementing dynamic theming support shouldn’t be too difficult for OEMs. Many of them already have theming engines, and some of them already offer something along the lines of dynamic theming.
Google will likely offer more details on these changes soon
We’re not really sure about the details here. Google probably has some sort of requests, based on the rumors, but we’re not sure what exactly. It is only said that some sort of dynamic theming should be supported, it doesn’t have to be the exact replica of what Google is offering.
Still, it seems like they’ll need to make their dynamic theming support compatible with Google’s APIs, and work across the company’s apps, while supporting third-party apps as well.
Do note that app developers have been asked to monitor updates to Material Theme Builder and Material Color Utilities libraries as well, so that they can adapt their apps.
