She may have set into motion an inevitable future.
In the eyes of the Royal family, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have committed nothing but crimes against the palace ever since they stepped down as senior royals. Whether it was tarnishing their reputation with their controversial revelations or refusing to fade into the background, they have not gotten back into the Royals’ good graces. And now, Meghan has meddled with Prince William’s ambitious plans for his monarchy, and fear is that the consequences will be dire.
Even though Harry and Meghan lost their Royal-level security and the support of Charles the second they set up their world beyond the palace walls, they still possessed their titles – His/Her Royal Highness. The deal was that they would retain it as long as they didn’t officially use it, and since they never flouted this rule, the expectations of them losing the honor remained limited to rumors.
But Meghan has unwittingly broken this tenuous deal as well by posting a screengrab of a message from a senior Ukrainian vice prime minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, that denoted her as “Your Royal Highness” while thanking her for supporting Ukraine as the country fights Russian invasion.
There have already been reports of Charles and William barely holding back their ire over the Sussexes going on international trips and getting senior royal treatment. Meghan seemingly flaunting the HRH title has been deemed as her way of mocking the Royals. As a friend of William shared with Daily Beast: “It’s actually quite a clever way of testing the water, because there is deniability there, she can say, ‘Well, I just wanted to publish this nice letter to raise awareness for Ukraine, and oops! they got my name wrong—but oh, actually, now I think of it, I never gave the title up anyway, and maybe I will start using it again.”
Whatever Meghan’s intentions are, it seems to have the potential to set up a chain reaction. Many are already predicting that this move might result in the couple losing their titles legally and permanently. As far as former King Charles’ butler, Garrett Harrold, is concerned, the ailing monarch would probably refrain from taking the step himself and instead let William do it when he becomes king, since it’s his plans that Meghan’s rebelliousness is threatening.
“Yes, I do think Prince William would be more likely to take that step than King Charles — not to stir up trouble necessarily, but because of the vision he’s started to outline for the monarchy. [William] recently said he wants the future of the royal family to be “royal with a small r,” which, to me, suggests he’s thinking about slimming it down — focusing on a more streamlined, working monarchy.”
This “streamlined” version will, according to Harrold, only include those who are actively contributing to the Royal institution. “That’s probably the moment when decisions about Harry and Meghan would really come to a head,” he added.
There only solution to evade this seemingly inevitable outcome is to return to the royal fold, and at this point, with Prince Harry fighting to expose the conspiracy to keep him “trapped” in the palace and whatnot, it seems more far-fetched than Charles growing the backbone to one day slam Donald Trump for his lack of leadership and humanity.
