Kieran Culkin‘s star has been steadily rising over the last decade. Acclaimed performances in Succession and the recent A Real Pain (which nabbed him a well-deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscar) have cemented him as a top talent and brought him a passionate fanbase.
However, this fame and success haven’t gone to his head. Yesterday, a fan posted about his encounter with Culkin in which he excitedly told him he’s his favorite actor. Culkin’s deadpan response? “Aim higher”. The fan then added that Culkin’s Oscars speech made him cry while watching at home, earning the response, “Wow. I didn’t even do that.”

The encounter took place on Broadway, where Culkin is playing Richard Roma in a revival of David Mamet’s iconic play Glengarry Glen Ross. It’s safe to say he’s receiving mixed reviews for his performance.
The Hollywood Reporter praises him as being “as adept with a sly, sardonic jab as he is with an explosive tirade and his live-wire physicality is mesmerizing.” The New York Daily News, meanwhile, said he’s “miscast” because of “a staccato delivery, a halting rhythm and an innate sense of vulnerability”. But whatever the critics think, Culkin’s name on the marquee is putting butts on seats, and has contributed to a record-breaking $51 million weekly gross for Broadway.
Culkin’s next movie performance is also arriving soon. He’ll be voicing Squealer in Andy Serkis’ adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Serkis has assembled a star-studded cast including Seth Rogen, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, Woody Harrelson, and Iman Vellani. That lands on Jul. 11. Beyond that Culkin’s next projects are unknown but, with that Oscar sitting on his shelf, he can pretty much choose to do whatever he wants to.
