Summary: A new survey report by Pew Research Center highlights that teens are equally worried about the effects of social media. At least 48 percent of teens believe that social media is negatively influencing people in their age group. That’s not all; many admitted that it affects their sleep and productivity as well.

Social media is addictive, and many would agree with this statement. In the past few years, lawmakers and even health professionals have called on social media tech giants to keep some restrictions in place to safeguard the mental health of the teen population on their platforms.

Last year, the US Surgeon General even said that social media should come with warning labels, just like cigarettes. Well, a new survey report recently highlighted that teens also worry about social media, as their perception of it is also heading in a similar direction.

A survey report hints that teens are also worried about the effects of social media

A survey report by Pew Research Center concludes that an increasing number of teens admit that social media has been consuming too much of their time and is harmful to them. The report includes findings based on a survey of 1,391 participating teens from the US.

Per the report, 48 percent of teens said that social media negatively influences people of their age. That’s a massive jump considering the Pew Research Center’s 2022 survey, where only one-third of surveyed teens said the same.

Only 11 percent (24 percent in 2022) of the surveyed teens believe that social media is having a “positive influence” on people in the same age group. The report also mentions that teens are less likely to say that social media is harming them personally. Only 14 percent of the surveyed teens admitted the same.

Many admitted that social media takes a toll on their sleep and productivity

Additionally, the report suggests that teens are now more aware of how much time they spend on social media. At least 45 percent of teens reportedly admitted to spending too much time on social media apps/platforms. Again, this is a big jump from 2023, where only 23 percent of surveyed teens said the same.

The latest report also notes that 45 percent of teens said that social media affects their sleep. In addition, 40 percent said that social media takes a toll on their productivity. What’s interesting is that 44 percent of surveyed teens said to have “cut back” on smartphones and social media usage.
