Today, Android 16 reaches platform stability, as Google releases the third beta. Google has one more beta scheduled for next month, with the final release coming after that. We expect Android 16 to be pushed to AOSP on June 3, as we reported months ago. And this timeline continues to follow that date.
With Android 16 Beta 3, this new version of Android has reached platform stability, which means that the API surface is now locked. So all app-facing behaviors are now final for Android 16, allowing developers to publish any necessary updates to prevent compatibility issues, as well as take advantage of the latest features.
Since this is the third beta for Android 16, there’s not a whole lot that has changed here. But Google is touting a new outline text to improve legibility for users with low vision. As well as Local Network Protection (LNP) being available for developer testing. This gives users in a future Android release more control over which apps can access devices on their local network.
Google is also announcing Auracast Support in Android 16
Perhaps the bigger news here is that Google is announcing support for Auracast. This is a new Bluetooth technology that enables compatible hearing aids and earbuds to receive direct audio streams from public venues. This is a pretty big deal, as sound broadcasted through speakers can sometimes sound muddled in crowds or noisy environments. So those with hearing aids have an even harder time hearing what’s going on.
Auracast with LE Audio compatible hearing aids from companies including GN Hearing and Starkey, and they can be paired with Samsung Galaxy devices running One UI 7 or Google Pixel 9 devices running the latest Android 16 Beta. Then users are able to tune into Auracast broadcasts from compatible TV streamers or public venues.
Google is also working to make access to streams more convenient by partnering with Auracast to create a QR code standard to connect to broadcasts without needing to fumble around in your settings. Currently, QR Codes are only available for Pixel 9 devices on Android 16 Beta.
