Even though Google just discontinued it, the Chromecast with Google TV just got a new update to Android 14. This update brings some new features, and some bugs.
Google first announced this update in May last year, and it promised that it would land some time before the new year. However, it got a pretty big delay, leaving people waiting a few extra months. The new update brings the Chromecast with Google TV up from Android 12, and it delivers the January 2023 security patch. That patch is a few months old, but it does make it much more secure.
Weighing in at over 800MB, this update brings two major new features to this newly discontinued streaming dongle.
Firstly, if you paired your Chromecast device with a Google TV Streamer remote, then you can now use the Find my remote function. Using Google Assistant or the Google Home app, you’ll be able to locate your remote if it ever gets lost.
Next, you’ll be able to use the customizable button. You’ll be able to set the button to open your favorite app, open the Google Home panel, or change the input source.
Android 14 for the Chromecast with Google TV has its bugs, however
Things aren’t all cheery, as this Android 14 update brings some issues. Fortunately, these issues aren’t quite widespread. Some users have reported issues like their color profiles being changed, users getting a “low power” warning when using a multi-purpose adaptor, issues with USB debugging, and bugs in the settings menu.
What’s perhaps the biggest issue is that external drives don’t seem to work. So, if you want to watch media from your flash drive or SD card, you might not be able to.
While these issues aren’t breaking the entire experience, we still hope that Google will deliver a fix soon. While the company did discontinue the Chromecast with Google TV, it’s still a great device.
