After flagships, Samsung is now hard at work on the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 update for its mid-range and budget smartphones. Simultaneously, it is also seeding the January 2022 Android security patch to more devices. The Galaxy S20 FE is the latest to pick up the new SMR (security maintenance release). Its 5G counterpart received the new security update a couple of weeks ago.
According to SamMobile, who first reported this rollout, the Galaxy S20 FE (4G) is receiving the January SMR with firmware version G780FXXS8DVA1 for the Exynos 990-powered units. The same update for the Snapdragon 865 version of the phone is rolling out with firmware version G780GXXS3BVA5.
The latest update for the 2020 Fan Edition Galaxy flagship is already available in dozens of countries in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Users in other markets, including the US, can also expect to receive the update in the coming weeks.
As Samsung confirmed earlier this month, the January SMR contains fixes for over 60 vulnerabilities. Most of those were found in Google’s version of Android. But a lot of the fixed vulnerabilities were exclusive to Samsung’s custom software as well. These include a few critical vulnerabilities that could cause severe damages to users if exploited in the wild. Either way, it’s an important update that you wouldn’t want to miss out on.
Galaxy S20 FE has already received the Android 12 update
This update for the Galaxy S20 FE follows a major update earlier this month that introduced the Android 12-based One UI 4.0. Both 4G-only and 5G models of the phone have picked up the big Android update over the past few weeks. The new One UI version has reached units in the US as well.
Launched in late 2020, the Galaxy S20 FE arrived with Android 10 onboard. It received the Android 11 update early last year and followed with the Android 12 update this year. Going forward, the device will receive at least one more major Android OS update, i.e. Android 13. Samsung promises a maximum of three Android iteration updates to its devices, with an additional year of security updates.
Nonetheless, if you’re rocking a 4G-only Galaxy S20 FE, you should soon receive the January security patch if you haven’t already. As always, you will be notified of the OTA (over the air) update once it becomes available for your phone. You can also manually check for it by navigating to Settings > Software update and tapping on Download and install.
