Apple could be planning to launch more iPhone models this year than usual. As expected, the iPhone 17 flagship series will take place later in the year. However, it is rumored that Apple will launch another model in the form of the iPhone SE 4th gen earlier in the year. Now, according to the latest rumors, the iPhone SE 4 could adopt the Dynamic Island feature.

Dynamic Island

This tip comes courtesy of tipster Evan Blass. According to Blass, one of the new features of the iPhone SE 4 is the inclusion of the Dynamic Island. The Dynamic Island is a feature that debuted in the iPhone 14 Pro series. It is Apple’s alternate take on the notch, which was present on previous iPhone models.

Instead of the notch sitting at the top of the display, the Dynamic Island is a pill-shaped cutout that sits slightly below the display. Apple uses it to display all kinds of information. This information includes running timers, progress updates from apps like Grab, currently playing songs, etc.

Interestingly, this is the first time we’ve heard about the Dynamic Island coming to the iPhone SE. The feature was not present in previous renders of the handset.

Is this a good thing?

Is the inclusion of Dynamic Island a good thing? In a way it is good. It brings the iPhone SE 4 on par with newer iPhone models. It also gives it access to the features of the Dynamic Island mentioned above, which some users might be able to appreciate. Customers can also save money to get similar features without splurging on the more expensive flagship models.

However, not everyone is a fan of the Dynamic Island. For starters, not all apps take advantage of it. Secondly, it is similar to Apple’s 3D Touch pressure-sensitive display from years ago in that how it functions may vary from app to app. For instance, native apps like the Music app allow users to bring up a mini player while long-pressing on the Dynamic Island.

Other third-party apps may only show information and tapping on it simply brings up the main app. This means that the experience will vary from app to app, so it won’t be very consistent. Also, some users don’t like how the cutout eats into the display more so than the notch.

At least with the notch, it sits right at the edge of the display. The Dynamic Island sits a little below, so there’s a weird and unusable gap. All of this is personal preference, of course, so at the end of the day, the inclusion is good for some users, and bad for others.

The iPhone SE 4 is rumored to debut in the coming months. This handset is said to cost less than $500, thanks to the potential use of Apple’s in-house modem.
