NETGEAR, a popular manufacturer of networking products, has announced a new Wi-Fi 7 mesh router, the Orbi 870, at the ongoing CES 2025. The latest addition to the Orbi family sits perfectly between the budget-friendly Orbi 770 and the premium Orbi 970.

NETGEAR’s new Orbi 870 tri-band mesh router system launched at CES 2025

The Orbi 870 shares some of the best features of its younger and older siblings from the Orbi family. For starters, the Orbi 870 is a tri-band system, just like the Orbi 770. It offers a 2.4 GHz band, a 5 GHz band, and a 6 GHz band. The latest mesh router offers four streams instead of two at 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands. This allows the Orbi 870 to provide double throughput over the Orbi 770 on the same bands.

The Orbi 870 also allows you to connect two of the above bands simultaneously, using Multi-Link Operation (MLO) with Wi-Fi 7 devices. It results in the Orbi 870 offering a stable connection, faster downloads, and low latency. Notably, the newest mesh router offers up to 21 Gbps combined Wi-Fi throughput across all three bands.

The Orbi 870 is ideal for internet connections of up to 2.5 Gbps. Plus, it supports up to 150 Wi-Fi devices, 50 more than the Orbi 770. The primary router comes with a 10 Gbps WAN port for the internet and four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports. All four LAN ports also extend to its satellites.

The mesh router system is backward compatible too

NETGEAR claims that the Orbi 870’s three-pack setup can cover up to 9,000 sq. feet with Wi-Fi. As with every other mesh router system, the actual coverage depends on both physical and wireless interference, depending on where you place these routers.

While it’s true that you’ll need Wi-Fi 7 devices to use the Wi-Fi 7 features, the Orbi 870 is backward compatible too. Thefore, it works with devices with older Wi-Fi standards as well.

As far as pricing is concerned, the three-pack Orbi 870 costs $1299. If you don’t want a three-pack, only two are also available for $999.99. For those willing to get add-on satellites, it’ll set you back $549.99. Moreover, you can choose the Orbi 870 from black and white color options.
