Recently, Google introduced Gemini 2.0 as the next generation of its AI models. For the initial launch, the company only revealed Gemini 2.0 Flash, although more models are expected in the near future. The company first enabled experimental access through the web version of Gemini. Now, Gemini 2.0 Flash experimental is being rolled out to the Gemini app on Android via the model switcher.
Gemini app’s model switcher on Android now lets you choose experimental Gemini 2.0 Flash, first in beta
As reported by 9to5Google, the Google beta app is getting a v15.50 update today. After installing it, the model selector at the top of the Gemini UI will list “Gemini 2.0 Flash experimental” as one of the available options. Previously, you could only use it to switch between the standard and Advanced Gemini models.
The company designed Gemini 2.0 Flash with speed in mind, as its name suggests. “It’s our workhorse model with low latency and enhanced performance at the cutting edge of our technology, at scale,” reads the company’s blog post about the model. Of course, this is the direct successor to Gemini 1.5 Flash, so if you’re a regular user of that one, you’re in luck, as you’ll have access to an even faster and better version.
The stable version of the Google app v15.50 update should be available starting next week. From there, more people will be able to have access to Google’s latest AI technology.
Some of the improvements in Gemini 2.0 Flash
Interestingly, Google claims that Gemini 2.0 Flash “outperforms 1.5 Pro on key benchmarks.” We are talking about the proper Gemini Pro 1.5, not the Flash version, which speaks highly of the work the company has done. This suggests that the “Pro” and “Ultra” versions of Gemini 2.0 will be quite powerful.
That said, Gemini 2.0 Flash is still in the experimental stage, so you might encounter some bugs or limitations. “While we’re excited for you to try it, remember it’s an early preview and might not work as expected. Additionally, some Gemini features won’t be compatible with this model in its experimental state,” says the firm.
Gemini 2.0 will be the basis for the multimodal experience introduced months ago. Furthermore, the company has enhanced these capabilities by incorporating multimodal output. This enables the model to generate “images mixed with text and steerable text-to-speech (TTS) multilingual audio,” among many other possibilities.
