Artificial intelligence has already successfully established itself as the present and future of the tech industry. The next step in the segment could be AI agents, which big companies are already working on. Now, an emerging name with familiar faces is developing an operating system for AI agents.
You could see AI agents as advanced versions of current AI assistants and chatbots. The main difference is that AI agents are capable of “making decisions” autonomously. To do so, they constantly analyze information from the environment. Being AI-based developments, they can “learn” as they process data and execute tasks to achieve more efficient ways of achieving specific goals. Developers of AI assistants have expressed their intentions to turn them into AI agents in the future.
Former Android devs want to develop the core operating system for AI agents
A startup named “/dev/agents” is currently competing to create the operating system that will power the AI agents of the future. Hugo Barra, a former Vice President of Android product management at Google, is one of its prominent figures. Barra also worked at Xiaomi and was the leader of Facebook’s Oculus VR team.
David Singleton, a former Vice President of Engineering for Android, is the cofounder and CEO of /dev/agents. Ficus Kirkpatrick, CTO of the startup, was an Android engineer and VP of AR and VR at Meta. Nicholas Jitkoff, a former member of the ChromeOS design team, has also joined the team as the chief design officer.
The CEO of the new player in the AI segment says the industry needs “an Android-like moment for AI.” In other words, the industry requires a common platform from which others can easily build. “We can see the promise of AI agents, but as a developer, it’s just too hard to build anything good,” Singleton said. After all, developing a competitive AI-based tool can require quite a bit of work and investment.
🚀 Excited to announce my new company: /dev/agents. I’m building the next-gen operating system for AI agents, joining my former colleagues @hbarra, @alcor, and @ficus as co-founders. We’re excited to partner with @ninaachadjian (Index Ventures) and @jillchase124 (CapitalG).… pic.twitter.com/N9Br7fHUKL

A platform that everyone can develop on; the “Android” of AI agents
/dev/agents aims to provide its own operating system for AI agents in an effort to simplify the process for developers. The company says the OS will be cloud-based, making it easier to use on almost any internet-connected hardware. In fact, Singleton made clear the cross-platform approach of the OS. He said on X that the project is intended “for trusted agents to work with users across all of their devices.”
There are no specific dates yet for the first version of the /dev/agents product. There’s an official website where you can follow the progress of the project, learn more about the company, and even check out the “jobs” section.
