The Book of Boba Fett isn’t exactly bad, but after three episodes, fans have begun grumbling that the story is unfolding at a snail’s pace. So far we’ve seen Fett do a fairly embarrassing job as Tatooine’s new Daimyo, with his achievements limited to recruiting two Gamorreans and a bunch of Hot Topic-looking street teens.
Things came to a head in the third episode, when he requested a breakdown of who controls which neighborhoods of Mos Espa, which seems like literally the first thing he should have asked for after taking the throne. Now, likely in response to those complaints, star Ming-Na Wen has assured us this is all going somewhere in an interview with The Radio Times.
“I really hope that they want to go back and see the whole thing over again in a different light after, you know, knowing how things have — I’m so careful with my words here, how things have evolved, and all these other elements that have come into play. You know, that’s what’s so great with [producers] Jon [Favreau] and Dave [Filioni]. They are so knowledgeable about this world, about Star Wars, and they’re such huge fans that they know how to set up the pieces and make moves that you don’t even know are coming.”
She also underlined that each coming episode will up the ante until the big finale:
“And then suddenly it’s like [claps her hands together] ooh, checkmate. So yeah, we’re waiting. We’re waiting for that win. We’re waiting for that hit. And not just ’til the very last episode, like each and every episode there’s new moves and new elements that come into play that hopefully will surprise the fans. I know it surprised me.”
All I can say is she’d better be right. There have been one too many scenes of Fett ambling through Mos Espa before being denied an audience with the mayor, so I’m hoping last week’s promise of a “war” proves true.
One positive element is that we just saw Fett take delivery of a Rancor and its trainer (played by Danny Trejo), so at minimum there’s a high chance at some killer Rancor-based chaos in the next few weeks.
The season is just seven episodes long, so we’re already just under halfway through. Let’s hope The Book of Boba Fett gets more exciting soon, as so far it’s very much in the shadow of The Mandalorian.
