Apple will not introduce a smart ring, Oura CEO Tom Hale told CNBC on Tuesday, pushing back against rumors suggesting Apple’s interest in the burgeoning wearables category.
Speaking at the Web Summit in Lisbon, Hale expressed doubts that Apple would launch a smart ring product, despite the buzz generated by Samsung’s release earlier this year. The wearable market, including devices like the Oura Ring, has seen growth, with Samsung’s product intensifying speculation around Apple’s involvement.
Apple eyes wearable market, but watches remain its focus
Hale explained that while Apple has maintained a focus on health monitoring with its popular Apple Watch, the company does not seem interested in a smart ring device that might compete with or “undercut” the Apple Watch. “I think they [Apple] are unconvinced about the value of having a ring and a watch together,” Hale told CNBC, adding that Apple’s approach may differ from other companies in the wearable space.
Apple has emphasized health-tracking features in recent years, creating an ecosystem around the Apple Watch, which remains a leading product for the company. According to Hale, the iPhone maker’s commitment to its watch platform makes a shift to a ring less likely.
Smart rings have gained popularity for tracking health metrics like sleep, heart rate, and activity, areas where Oura has established itself since 2013. These devices offer an alternative to smartwatches, especially for wearers looking for something lightweight with extended battery life that doesn’t require frequent charging or removal. In contrast, smartwatches can be bulkier and less comfortable for all-day wear.
The recent release of Samsung’s smart ring has led industry analysts to speculate that Apple could enter the ring market as early as 2026. Hale, however, remains skeptical, saying, “They’re probably keeping a close eye on Samsung and a close eye on us, but it’s hard to do this product category right.”
Oura’s Expansion Amid Speculation
Amid the growing interest in health-tracking wearables, Oura recently launched its Oura Ring 4, further establishing itself in the smart ring sector. Hale sees Oura’s progress as distinct from Apple’s focus, noting, “Apple is very much a focused company. They’re like: ‘We’ve put our bet on the watch. We’re gonna make the watch our platform.’” Hale’s insights add context to Apple’s cautious approach, which may prioritize its existing health-focused devices over expanding into rings.
