Acclaimed filmmaker Ti West is back with another genre-bending horror film, X. The film revolves around a group of unsuspecting filmmakers whose plan to shoot an adult film on an old farm is violently foiled by its elderly owners. Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Sacrament) has written and directed X with the backing of A24 Films. An official trailer was recently released, which you can check out below.

X will be West’s first feature film since 2016, and from the looks of it, he really wants to make up for his absence with this bloody horror. X features a talented star cast comprising the like of Mia Goth (A Cure for Wellness, Suspiria), Scott Mescudi aka Kid Cudi (Don’t Look Up, Entourage), Jenna Ortega (Scream, Stuck in the Middle), Brittany Snow (American Dreams, Pitch Perfect), Martin Henderson (The Ring, Virgin River) and Owen Campbell (As You Are) with Stephen Ure (Deathgasm). The official synopsis for X reads as follows:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the cast find themselves fighting for their lives.”

Raunchy, spooky, and boasting a 70s vibe, X trailer opens with Snow signaling cameras to roll on the adult film titled “Farmers Daughter.” Dreaming of making it into Hollywood, the crew rents an old farm without telling the owner what they’re planning to shoot. “Well, it’s better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission,” Henderson’s character says. That kind of thinking has spelled doom for many people.

X looks incredibly intriguing and feels like a breath of fresh air in the world of reboots, remakes, and legacy sequels. Plus, Ti West hasn’t disappointed in the past. The trailer also gives a meta feel with dialogues like “I see one goddamn f****d up horror picture” and “You don’t wanna leave, do you?”. There are also hints that the couple is harboring a disturbing secret about the wife, Pearl. That being said, the filmmakers of X have maintained secrecy till now, and barring a few, even character names haven’t been disclosed yet. There is undoubtedly more to the movie than meets the eye.

A24

Although the title suggests otherwise, X has been rated R “for strong bloody violence and gore, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use, and language.”

The name A24 Films has become synonymous with bizarre yet outstanding horror films in the past years. For instance, 2021’s Lamb, starring Noomi Rapace, was about an Icelandic couple raising a goat-human hybrid baby. Hereditary, Midsommar, and The Witch are some of the more serious horror films made by A24. On the other hand, X feels like a crowd-pleaser, blending frights with fun. We’ll find out more when the movie comes out. X is slated to be released on March 18, 2022.
