Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg need to learn to watch their step in the latest clip from Sony Pictures’ upcoming video game adaptation, Uncharted. In the footage, released courtesy of the official Uncharted Twitter account, Tati Gabrielle’s character, Braddock, puts the struggling adventurers through their paces, as Holland’s Nathan Drake is sent hurling from an in-flight airplane in a sequence that looks surprisingly reminiscent of the games on which the movie is based.

Uncharted will introduce audiences to Tom Holland as aspiring explorer Nathan Drake. He decides to embark on his first adventure alongside rival-turned-partner Victor “Sully” Sullivan, played by Mark Wahlberg. Based on Naughty Dog’s hugely successful video game franchise of the same name, the movie will act as a prequel to the series, establishing an early version of Nathan Drake and his partnership with Sully, as the pair slowly become the treasure hunters fans know and love while unraveling one of history’s greatest mysteries and treasures in an action-adventure epic that spans the globe.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Venom and Zombieland: Double Tap director Ruben Fleischer is at the helm of this live-action take on the popular video game, with the script coming from Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Starring alongside Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, and Tati Gabrielle, Uncharted features a supporting cast featuring Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer, a fellow fortune hunter who is Nate’s love interest, and Antonio Banderas as Moncada, a ruthless treasure hunter and the movie’s main villain.

Adapting Uncharted has been no easy feat, with the project having been sat in the pipeline for so long that Mark Wahlberg was originally due to play Drake rather than Sully. Thanks to the ceaseless passage of time, Wahlberg has instead stepped into the role of mentor character, Sully, making way for Tom Holland to bring Nathan Drake to life on the silver screen for the first time.

Approaching such a highly anticipated adaptation is undeniably tricky, but according to Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann, director Ruben Fleischer has gone to great effort to ensure that Uncharted appeals to both fans of the source material and newcomers. Druckmann has revealed that Fleischer’s aim was to make an Uncharted movie that will appeal to “both hardcore fans of the game and those who are not yet familiar with the franchise,” and that he believes this has been achieved declaring “that both will be equally entertained by this incredibly fun and action-packed film.”

Of course, trying to play to both Uncharted enthusiasts and everyday cinema-goers will surely be a hugely difficult task, and could result in the movie appealing to neither. Hopefully, Fleischer has managed to strike the right balance and create an exciting, captivating, action-packed adventure outing that will continue Tom Holland’s success following the recent release of Marvel’s record-breaking sequel, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

After suffering delay, after delay, after delay, dating back to 2016, Uncharted is at last scheduled to be theatrically released by Sony Pictures Releasing first in the United Kingdom on February 11, 2022 then in the United States on February 18.
