Qualcomm is extending its alliance with Samsung and Google. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon told CNBC that the company is working with these brands to bring a mixed-reality set of glasses to market. Furthermore, Amon said these glasses will be paired with smartphones, taking a different approach than other MR (mixed reality) headsets on the market.

The original partnership between Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google was first formed last year to make mixed-reality products.

Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google are building mixed-reality glasses together

According to the report, Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google are developing mixed-reality glasses. The partnership is aiming to make a new product and experience, different from larger headsets like the Apple Vision Pro. Apple’s headset is designed to be worn on the head and controlled via hand gestures. In comparison, the Qualcomm-led MR project will focus on integrating mixed reality technology into smartphone-linked glasses.

In the Qualcomm CEO’s words, “It’s going to be a new product, it’s going to be new experiences”. Amon also added, “What I really expect to come out of this partnership, I want everyone that has a phone to go buy companion glasses to go along with it”. Amon’s comments are among the first from Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google to shed light on the MR glasses project.

The CEO also emphasized the importance of on-device artificial intelligence features during the interview. Amon noted that “AI is going to run on the device. It’s going to run on the cloud. It’s going to run some in the glass, some in the phone, but at the end of the day, there’s going to be [a] whole new experience.” So we can expect the upcoming MR glasses from the alliance to offer next-gen AI functionalities.

The MR glasses will have a similar design to regular shades

Notably, Amon referenced Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses during the interview. They look like regular glasses but are connected to a phone, apart from offering built-in camera features. On top of that, they also offer a voice assistant that’s powered by Meta’s Llama artificial intelligence model.

The mixed-reality glasses project that Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google are working on will offer a design similar to regular glasses. They won’t be as inconvenient and uncomfortable to wear as the other MR headsets on the market. Unfortunately, the report didn’t mention when exactly the first fruit of the partnership will see the light of the day.
