Google claims it is trying to restrict AI misinformation before the US elections. The search giant stated it has multiple restrictions on platforms that can have Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) content.

Google imposes US elections-related restrictions on Gen AI

Gen AI and AI-generated content have been spreading rapidly online. One of the most sensitive events that could be heavily influenced by AI content is the US elections.

The US elections take place in November. And presidential campaigns of both contenders have taken momentum. Needless to say, social media platforms have become virtual battlegrounds, and misinformation is a potent weapon.

There’s a need to curb AI-generated content from spreading misinformation, propaganda, and false news. Google claims it has applied election-related restrictions to many Gen AI products. Incidentally, the company had deployed similar restrictions last year.

Google has several platforms where its Gemini AI has become quite active. These include Search AI Overviews, YouTube AI-generated summaries for Live Chat, Gems, and image generation in Gemini.

Google is working with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) to, “provide more transparency and context for people on AI-generated content”.

How will Google tackle AI content on YouTube, Gemini, and Play Store?

Google claims it has specific algorithms in place to ensure its Gen AI platforms offer true and factually accurate information. The Google Search platform, for example, will offer aggregated resources and information from state election offices, provided by Democracy Works.

US citizens searching for federal election candidates on YouTube may see an information panel above the search results. This AI-generated panel will highlight candidate details, such as their political party, and a link to Google Search.

Additionally, Google will show reminders on where and how to vote on the YouTube homepage. This awareness campaign should begin in the final weeks of the presidential campaign.

Google will reportedly restrict responses for election-related queries on the Gemini apps and web experience. The search giant has assured it will help people across the US with “high-quality and reliable information from non-partisan organizations.”
