Rumored new Batman game to be based on 2022 film’s Penguin

A new Batman game is said to be in the works and it apparently finds roots in a character that isn’t the main hero, nor a hero at all, as a rumor suggests that the upcoming game is based on the Penguin. Not just any Penguin, however, but the Penguin from the 2022 film ‘The Batman’ directed by Matt Reeves.

Matt Reeves’s The Batman film was a big hit with fans, and it was in no small part to Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of the dark knight himself. Easily thought of as one of the best Batman portrayals from any of the films. Despite Pattinson’s excellent version of the character, it was at times Collin Farrell’s Penguin who stole the scene. This popularity for one of Batman’s arch-enemies has led to an official TV series that’s due to release on Max, with the first episode airing on September 19.

Now, it looks like there’s a game in development as well. What makes this more interesting is the fact that this is kind of the first game that would truly let you play as the villain from a main character standpoint. Batman villains and anti-heroes have been playable in numerous games before. But rarely as a main character experience. Save for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

The Penguin Batman game is currently in development

While there’s not much detail on the game at the moment, there is one tidbit of information that’s out there. The game is currently in development. This is according to Puck’s Matthew Beloni (via Reddit and spotted by Wccftech), who says that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav “sees the games unit as strategic” and refused to sell it off. Beloni also states that Warner Bros. Discovery divisions are beginning to collaborate more closely on certain properties.

One of those properties is the “Pneguin HBO show and game that are both seeded in the 2022 The Batman movie.”

Nothing has been confirmed so far

Obviously, none of this has been confirmed by Warner Bros. Discovery. If it’s accurate, however, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of direction the game takes. It’s not the only Batman game in the works as there’s an upcoming title coming for the Meta Quest 3. That game was announced back at the beginning of May, and is expected to be released in late 2024.
