We have heard and seen plenty about the OnePlus 10 Pro over the past few weeks. But its cheaper sibling, the vanilla OnePlus 10, hasn’t got as much limelight. Today, we have an interesting bit of information about the latter though. According to tipster Yogesh Brar (via MySmartPrice), the OnePlus 10 could ship with MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 SoC over Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The OnePlus 10 Pro will reportedly get the latter.
This comes as a surprise for a couple of reasons. Firstly, OnePlus has always used Snapdragon chipsets in its flagship models. Until the Nord 2 last year, which featured the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC, it also used Qualcomm processors in its lower-cost models. On top of that, the OnePlus 10 and OnePlus 10 Pro are two models in the same series.
Of course, the two models will vary in several aspects. The former could be a smaller package, meaning a smaller battery and screen. We could also see some differences in the camera department as well. But when it comes to the processor, fans would want to see consistency across the OnePlus 10 and OnePlus 10 Pro. People already hate Samsung for using different chipsets in the same phone in different markets. We are, of course, not talking about the same phone here, but using the same processor in two models in the same series will enable buyers to make an informed selection.
It’s not like the Dimensity 9000 is inferior to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or vice versa. We don’t know that yet. MediaTek has high hopes on its latest chipset to help it close the gap on Qualcomm in the flagship market. And it appears to be on the way to doing just that. The OnePlus 10 using the Dimensity 9000 is a big win for the Taiwanese company.
OnePlus will soon start testing its new unified OS
OnePlus last year merged with Oppo. The two firms are also combining their respective custom Android skins, OxygenOS and Color OS, to form a new unified OS that will ship with future OnePlus and Oppo phones. It appears the development has progressed enough for the companies to start testing it. According to the new report, testing will begin soon globally. It will likely be based on Android 12.
As far as the OnePlus 10 series launch is concerned, the same source had previously claimed that the two models will not launch at the same time. The OnePlus 10 Pro could arrive as early as next week but the vanilla OnePlus 10 could keep us waiting for a few more months. We will keep you posted.
