If you are planning to enter the PS5 gaming space and are based in Japan, soon, you’ll have to pay more than the usual price to buy the standard PS5 model. Sony has revised the price of PlayStation 5 in Japan. Notably, the revised pricing model for PS5 indicates a steep hike of 19 percent.
Sony hikes the price of the PS5 console in Japan by 19 percent
The revised price of the standard PS5 model will be ¥79,980 (~ $554). The new price will be effective from September 2, 2024. It is worth noting that the price hike of PS5 is only limited to Japan. Therefore, no other countries are affected by the latest price hike.
Today, in a Japanese blog post, Sony said it reached this decision considering the “recent challenging external environment including the current fluctuations in the global economic situation.” Worth noting that the surprise price hike comes as the PS5 is turning four years old this November.
It’s not that Sony has hiked the price of PS5 for the first time. The company had already raised the console’s price around the world excluding the US a couple of years back. Not to forget, Sony cited a similar reason for the PS5’s price hike at that time, too.
Other accessories are also getting costlier
Besides the standard PS5, the Digital Edition also sees a similar price hike. Additionally, accessories like DualSense Wireless Controller, Pulse Wireless Headset/Earphones, and PlayStation VR2 will also cost more following the revised price.
While it’s unusual for Sony to raise the price by this much, especially this late into the console’s lifespan, we have seen this happening with Microsoft too. Just last month, Microsoft also announced a price hike for Xbox Series X|S in Japan by 12 percent.
All that said, there are rumors about a new PS5 Pro coming this fall. Therefore, it could be one tactic to boost the sales of the upcoming PlayStation gaming console by sacrificing the sales of the old one which Sony expects to be low in 2025.
