This year, the smart glasses segment is set to receive new advanced models from two of its main names. According to reports, Meta and Snap are expected to launch AR glasses as early as next month.

Snap and Meta to launch new AR glasses soon

Both Meta and Snap have extensive experience in the niche category after multiple generations of products. Mark Zuckerberg’s company has worked with Ray-Ban for its smart glasses, while Snapchat’s parent company has its Spectacles. The latter made a significant technological leap with its 4th-generation model by including displays for AR (augmented reality) features for the first time. However, it’s been more than 3 years since they were launched, so it’s about time for a refresh.

Well, recent reports claim that the 5th-generation Spectacles will arrive on September 17. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel will show the new product during the Snap annual Partner Summit in Los Angeles. On the other hand, Meta is said to have even more ambitious plans for its next release. The company will show its new wearable on September 25 at the Connect conference in Menlo Park.

Meta presents the most advanced AR smart glasses to date

So far, no Ray-Ban smart glasses have featured a display. Meta’s glasses focus on boosting content creation and uploading. They also allow you to interact with the Meta AI assistant via voice commands. However, the report claims that the company is working on the most advanced AR smart glasses to date under the codename “Orion.” Of course, that would imply that they would have a screen for the first time, which opens up a new world of possibilities.

Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth teased something similar earlier this year. Bosworth told The Verge that the product “might be the most advanced piece of technology on the planet in its domain. In the domain of consumer electronics, it might be the most advanced thing that we’ve ever produced as a species.”

Regarding the Spectacles 5th gen, there are still no details on its potential improvements. It will probably integrate Snapchat’s My AI assistant as one of its main new features. The report adds that Snap could produce around 10,000 units of these glasses. Meanwhile, Meta would produce even fewer units of the AR Orion glasses.
