Multiple reports in the past few years have suggested that Samsung is working on a new device form factor with dual-foldable displays. Notably, the company has already received patent approvals for trifold and rollable smartphone displays earlier this year. Now, Samsung has officially announced it is working on new devices with double-foldable and rollable displays.

Samsung is working on new devices with multiple form factors, including double-foldable and rollable

Samsung is working on devices with multiple form factors, including ones with double-foldable and rollable displays. The company revealed the information during its “Everlasting Evolution of Display with AI” keynote at the IMID 2024 expo in Korea. During the keynote, Samsung Display VP Chung Yi said the brand is working on products with multiple form factors to meet smartphone needs in the AI era.

Furthermore, Yi mentioned the brand is working on new technologies that will provide devices with large screens that are easy to carry. He said that Samsung is developing many form factor devices, such as double-folding, multi-foldables, and even rollables. We have already seen various designs for such devices in several patent filings from Samsung earlier.

Notably, Samsung also displayed a micro-LED display, which can stretch like rubber during the same event. This type of screen can be stretched up to 1.25 times of its size or twisted like a rubber. Still, the display will manage to return to its original shape.

Samsung isn’t the only brand working on multi-fold devices

Samsung isn’t the only smartphone company that’s working on devices with double-foldable displays. Various brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, and OPPO have already shown their interest in this segment. Notably, Huawei will become the first company to both introduce and start selling a tri-fold device next month.

Huawei’s device will have two hinges that fold the screen from two separate places, creating a zig-zag shape with three equal-sized parts. Some images of the device were leaked recently. In the photos, the phone looks promisingly thin, despite having a rumored 10-inch foldable display.

That said, the first range of smartphones with multi-fold displays won’t be as affordable as the current book or clamshell-style foldable smartphones. Notably, the prototype of Huawei’s upcoming phone in this segment is said to cost as much as $4,900. The company is looking for ways to bring its price down. We’ll see how Huawei manages to do that at the launch event at some point in September.
