Of all the announcements Google made today, one of the most interesting is the Loss of Pulse Detection on the Pixel Watch 3. Google has been ramping up its safety features in the Pixel Watch lineup since last year’s Pixel Watch 2, adding safety measures like fall detection and SOS alerts. These are both incredibly useful if you’re ever in a potentially dangerous situation, but the Loss of Pulse Detection on the Pixel Watch 3 seems to take things to a new level.
This is a first-of-its-kind feature that we haven’t seen on any other smartwatch so far. The Pixel Watch 3 still has plenty of other new and familiar features too, but this is something new and unique that can give users a little more peace of mind. A loss of pulse event can be a life-threatening situation and unfortunately, these kinds of events often happen when people are alone. These kinds of events can also happen due to numerous factors like cardiac arrest, poisoning, respiratory or circulatory failure, and overdose. The Loss of Pulse Detection feature aims to ensure people get the help they need if such an event does pop up.
If the Pixel Watch 3 detects a loss of pulse, it can automatically place a call to emergency services. That’s the first step in getting people help. In addition to placing the call, this feature can also send an automated message with more context. Such as your location so responders know where you are.
Loss of Pulse Detection on the Pixel Watch 3 will launch in the EU and the UK
As groundbreaking as this new feature is for health and safety, it’s unfortunately not launching everywhere initially. Google says it will be available on the Pixel Watch 3 in certain countries in the EU and in the UK at launch. That means if you purchase the Pixel Watch 3 anywhere outside of those supported regions, this will not be available. There is a reason for that, however.
Google is working with regulatory bodies to expand the feature’s support
Most health-related features need to go through several regulatory processes and approvals before they can be rolled out. That appears to be the reason why this won’t be available on the Pixel Watch 3 outside of the EU and the UK when the feature goes live.
Google does confirm that it’s working with regulatory bodies to expand support for it though. So with time, we may see it rolled out to other countries like the US.
