Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone has been popping up in the news rather frequently lately. In fact, the company’s chairman, Richard Yu, was spotted using the device. A new rumor just surfaced, claiming that Huawei is trying to reduce the cost of its first tri-fold smartphone.

Huawei needs to reduce the cost of its first tri-fold smartphone, before releasing it

This rumor claims that the current engineering prototype is currently priced at almost $5,000. The anticipated retail price for the mass-produced model is set at CNY29,000 (approximately $4,000).

That’s still very high, though. You can basically get two Pixel 9 Pro Fold handsets and still have cash left over. That foldable device is priced at $1,799, so the two cost $3,600. Let’s hope that Huawei will find a way to bring the price even further down.

It’s possible Huawei will release a very limited number of units, though, if it ends up going for this price tag. It will be quite a feat regardless, as not a single company has a tri-fold smartphone to offer.

Huawei is expected to be the first company to release a tri-fold device

Samsung and Huawei are the closest to releasing one, but Samsung is not as close as Huawei, allegedly. Huawei is actually expected to announce this smartphone later this year, or in the first half of next year, based on rumors.

We still don’t have the details when it comes to the device, but it’s possible its display will be around 10 inches in diagonal when unfolded. When folded, you should be able to use a regular smartphone display.

A new Kirin chip from Huawei and SMIC is expected to fuel this smartphone. We presume that it will be the same chip that will fuel the Huawei Mate 70 series, which is expected to arrive later this year.

Let’s see how accurate is this rumor, as we’re still hoping that Huawei will be able to hit a much lower price tag.
