TikTok adds group chats with support for up to 32 people

Popular short video-sharing platform TikTok has finally launched the group chats functionality. The app now allows users to create groups with up to 32 participants. TikTok owner ByteDance notes that the new group chats feature is rolling out in limited regions. However, those with access to the feature can add up to 32 people in their group conversations. Furthermore, TikTok is also bringing the much-requested stickers to the direct messaging.

TikTok users can now create group chats with up to 32 participants

TikTok announced the new group chats functionality in a newsroom post on its website. As with the regular direct messages, the group chats feature isn’t available for users aged between 13 and 15. The new functionality is available for 16- and 17-year-old TikTok users. Notably, the company is taking some safety measures with the new feature. The aforementioned users can only join a group chat if they have at least one mutual friend.

Everyone, including teens, can only be included in a group chat by people they follow who also follow them. Also, when a teen creates a group chat, by default they will be required to review and approve new joiners. Essentially, TikTok has put these safety measures in place to block communication with strangers.

TikTok users can kick off a group chat in a couple of ways. The app allows you to create a group conversation from the inbox. You can hit the Chat button at the top of the screen and select the “More options…” button. Then you can add which friends you want to include in the conversation and then select “Start group chat”. You can also start a group chat by sharing a post with a handful of people.

TikTok is also brining Stickers to DMs

Furthermore, TikTok has announced that it is bringing the much-requested stickers to DMs. The new feature allows users to engage with each other visually. The app allows people to create and upload their own custom stickers for everyone to use. The custom stickers functionality is available in direct messages for users that are 18 or older.
