Google has just confirmed the start of the August patch rollout for all Pixel Watch devices. Starting now, you should be receiving the OTA availability notification on your wearable. You can also check it manually from your watch’s settings.

This isn’t a big update, like Wear OS 5 will be. Instead, it’s just a small incremental update that includes “the latest security patches,” so you won’t find an extensive changelog for this one. More specifically, compatible devices are getting the August 2024 security patch to keep them safe from potential vulnerabilities.

August update now available for all Google Pixel Watch devices; only brings security patches

All Pixel Watch devices running Wear OS 4 (Gen 1 and 2) are eligible for the update. Interestingly, Google’s smartwatches aren’t the most up-to-date as of today. That honor goes to the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra, which are already running Wear OS 5, the latest version of Google’s OS for wearables. Google may be taking its time to polish Wear OS 5 before a massive rollout to its products in the coming weeks. Anyway, the August security patch has build number TWD9.240805.001.A2 on all models.

Regardless, it’s likely that the company wants to ship all its next major updates on the same day. That is, Wear OS 5 could be available alongside the first Android 15 stable rollout. However, this is just speculation, as there’s nothing official about it. Meanwhile, there are even rumors suggesting that the Pixel 9 series will launch with Android 14, getting Android 15 shortly after with a feature drop update.

The next Made by Google event will take place on August 13. The company is expected to announce the Pixel Watch 3 series, and they may want them to be their first wearables to feature Wear OS 5. Unlike previous generations, the Pixel Watch 3 will be available in two sizes to fit a wider audience that has seen the Pixel Watch 1 and 2 as “too small.”
