OpenAI has started the rollout of the Advanced Voice Mode feature for ChatGPT Plus Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI). However, the company seems to be taking an extremely cautious approach.

Not all ChatGPT Plus subscribers are part of the OpenAI Voice Mode rollout

ChatGPT’s subreddit has confirmed that OpenAI is rolling out the Advance Voice Mode to some ChatGPT Plus subscribers. The company has clarified that a full release for the feature might not happen until the end of this year.

“Our rollout of Advanced Voice Mode has started. We’re slowly enrolling users in the alpha to ensure the quality of the experience.”

OpenAI had previously claimed the deployment of ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode would be delayed for “safety reasons”. Back then, the company claimed it was “improving the model’s ability to detect and refuse certain content”.

What this means is that OpenAI is intentionally slowing down the rollout of the Voice Mode. The company claims it intends to ensure quality of service. However, some experts imply the restricted nature of the deployment is to test the waters and ensure ChatGPT can offer reliable and fast response.

Incidentally, there’s a waitlist for SearchGPT, a search engine from OpenAI. Moreover, the platform is an extremely early-stage prototype. OpenAI limiting the availability of Voice Mode seems to suggest the company’s resources are stretched thin or the new mode isn’t fully matured for general deployment yet.

Is the new ChatGPT feature worth the wait?

OpenAI has been making some serious strides in Gen AI. The company’s ChatGPT-4o, based on the GPT 4.0 engine is quite fast and accurate. Moreover, it appears to be better than Google’s Gemini.

ChatGPT does have a rudimentary voice mode. However, OpenAI has routinely implied the Advanced Voice Mode will feel like talking to a virtual, personal assistant that users can engage in natural, spoken conversations. Users would also be able to interrupt ChatGPT, just as in a normal conversation with a person. Incidentally, the company had halted the previous version of the Voice Mode.

During the initial launch, the Advanced Voice Mode will have only four preset options of voices to avoid impersonation. Moreover, the platform will detect and deny certain requests that aim to generate music or other copyrighted audio.
