Ahead of the Made by Google event on August 13, we’re getting a bit more details on the new Pixel devices. This includes a god bit of their specs. According to our source, all three slab Pixel phones will start at 128GB of storage, with the two “Pro” models having 16GB of RAM, and the regular Pixel 9 having 12GB. The latter of which was already confirmed by promo images that leaked last week.
Even if Google sticks to the same prices as last year, that means they are charging you $1,000 for 128GB of storage, which should not be okay in 2024. We have to urge everyone thinking about buying a Pixel 9 to opt for the larger storage variants. On the Pixel 9, there will be 128GB and 256GB available. At the same time, the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL will come in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. We don’t know the pricing yet, but it would not be surprising to see the Pixel 9 Pro XL jump $100 or more when compared to the Pixel 8 Pro from last year.
As for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, it will be available in 256GB and 512GB, just like the original Pixel Fold. However, in India Google will only sell the Pixel 9 Pro Fold in 256GB.
Google will start selling a new, 45W USB-C fast charger
Also according to our source, it looks like Google is increasing the charging speeds of the Pixels, a little bit. On the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro it will charge “up to 55% in about 30 minutes”, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL will charge “up to 70% in about 30 minutes”. And that’s when using the Google 45W USB-C charger. Currently, Google only sells a 30W USB-C charger on the Google Store.
While we don’t know the charging speeds for the three devices, this sounds like the Pixel 8, at least for the smaller Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro models. This is thanks to the battery being about 3% larger this year, even though the Pixel 8 was rated at 50% charge in 30 minutes.
Where it is most likely faster is on the Pixel 9 Pro XL, which has a very slightly larger 5060mAh capacity battery (only 10mAh larger than Pixel 8 Pro) and it can charge to 70% in 30 minutes, versus the 50% in 30 minutes that the Pixel 8 Pro offered. That was rated at 30W, and seeing as Google is now releasing a 45W USB-C charger, it’s likely a little bit faster than that. Our best guess would be no faster than 33W. That still puts the entire Pixel 9 series behind the competition in the US, never mind across the world.
All three models promise “24 hours of battery life” with up to 100 hours in Extreme Battery Saver mode. While the Pixel 9 Pro Fold sports a 4650mAh capacity battery and only has 72 hours in Extreme Battery Saver, but still has 24 hours of battery life.
