Samsung launched a bunch of new products in its second Galaxy Unpacked event on July 10, including the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Buds 3 series, Galaxy Watch 7 series and more. Now the company has shared a post about its Galaxy Z Flip devices. The post talks about a new use case its compact foldable devices.
It’s common for police officers to deal with fast-paced and often dangerous situations on a daily basis. Samsung wants to utilize its technologies to help them overcome some of the challenges and make life a little bit easier for them. The goal is to enable workers to carry out tasks more effectively and even improve safety and transparency.
Galaxy Z Flip 6 units are being used by police officers as a bodycam
The Kimberling City Police and the Indian Point Police in Missouri conducted a pilot program two years ago to test out new devices to help improve daily operations. According to Samsung, officers were equipped with Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series phones. The intention was to help them find efficiencies in their work through several methods. It includes their use as a body-worn camera. It is the first time police officers have used foldables for this purpose and it helps them promote transparency. The pilot program has been completed with successful results.
Samsung typically advertises the hands-free photo-taking ability of its flip phones offered by the feature called Flex Cam. This year, the company even showed at launch that the phone can also adjust the framing all by itself. There are also other attractive features like the interpreter mode, which allows users to communicate in real time with people who speak different languages.
It also takes advantage of the hinge of the device. It shows the text to both the people conveniently with the help of the inner and outer display. Now the company is going beyond and searching for more use cases (such as the Galaxy Z Flip 6 bodycam functionality). Various use cases may benefit from its compact device with two displays, cameras, and a hinge.
The Samsung flip phone in the image is different from regular models
There are some differences between the regular Galaxy Z Flip devices and the ones the police officers have been using. The company reportedly worked with Visual Labs to customize the phones for law enforcement. For those unfamiliar, Virtual Labs is “a leading body camera solution provider”.
One of the main changes in the customization process is “remapping the external volume button to start the body camera recordings in urgent situations.” Recordings can also be set to automatically start when the phone detects a pursuit. If used with a dashcam, recording also begins automatically whenever a vehicle’s emergency lights are activated.
