What’s powerful AI without a disturbingly realistic voice? OpenAI has been working on giving ChatGPT some vocal cords for a while, and people have all been waiting for it to come out. Well, according to a new report, ChatGPT’s voice feature is rolling out now, but most users shouldn’t get too excited.
This voice feature might have been out already, but it reached a bit of a roadblock in its development. If you recall, the company first introduced us to the voice back in May. While we were all impressed, one celebrity wasn’t. The voice sounded eerily similar to Scarlett Johansson’s.
That’s no coincidence, as the company contacted her to license her voice a while before. She declined the offer, so it’s a little suspicious that a voice should suddenly pop up that sounds similar to hers. In any case, the company rolled back the voice and delayed the launch.
ChatGPT’s voice is rolling out
So, the voice that OpenAI showed off was scary good (emphasis on scary). It shows how far we’ve come in terms of replicating the human voice, and it only makes us wonder how long the voice-acting industry is going to be around.
It’s the vocal companion that will narrate all of the text that ChatGPT generates. If the voice can do all of what we saw during the showcase, then you’ll be able to tell it to say the words in different ways. You might be able to tell it to speak with different emotions.
Not only that, but we saw OpenAI tell it to sing what it spoke, and it did so with unsettling accuracy. So, this might be good for some people, but devastating to several industries.
ChatGPT’s voice is rolling out now to a limited number of ChatGPT Plus users for testing. When the feature comes out, it will only have four voices recorded with voice actors. This way, users won’t be able to use it to impersonate other people or public figures. After the initial testing period, this feature will make it to all ChatGPT Plus users in the Fall.
