Microsoft is working on a double-folding device as the next generation of its foldable devices, and a recently leaked patent shows us some features of these devices.
According to Android Authority, the patent is about a “multi-panel display device” with two hinges and three distinct sections. Also, each one has a dedicated display portion. This patent was filed in June 2020, and Microsoft acquired ownership on December 23, 2021.
Microsoft’s new foldable is a double-folding triple-screen device in more straightforward language. When the device is completely folded, one screen remains active and can be used as the main screen. This is what we see in the regular phones in the market. Also, the device can act as a tablet when unfolded.
Microsoft files a patent for a double-folding device
The leaked image of the patent does not give us many details, and at the moment, we can not provide more information about its features. Also, there are no sections for the camera, ports, and buttons in this patent.
Microsoft has raised the bar with its Surface Duo 2, and the company’s new foldable device must hang in the same crowd to be a real successor. We still don’t know when Microsoft will reveal its double-folding device. However, it can be a significant upgrade to Surface Duo 2 and add fuel to the fire of competition.
Samsung is working on a similar device
Of course, Microsoft is not the only company working on multiple folding devices. A few days ago, a new leaked patent from Samsung exposed the company’s ambitions for a triple-folding smartphone. Samsung’s new foldable device works the same way as Microsoft’s new device. Of course, Samsung’s patent includes much more information about the possible features.
It is evident that double-screen devices don’t satisfy companies anymore, and they are striving to introduce a new standard in the market. Samsung and Microsoft are the leaders of the foldable devices market, and their investment in a triple-folding device proves their commitment to innovation and competition.
