Files by Google could receive an option to create zip files directly from the app. The company would also allow you to pin folders to the “Collection” tab on the app’s main page for faster access. With this, Google would seek to make its Files app more attractive and functional as a file manager so that you do not have to resort to others.
The potential new features were spotted by Android Authority in the latest Files by Google beta 1.4237.652465286.1-release. The new “Compress” and “Add to collection” functions are not available by default, but can be enabled via certain flags. However, none of them are functional at the moment, although they become visible in the UI after being enabled.
“Compress” and “Add to collection” new options spotted in Google Files beta
Starting with the “Compress” option, it will allow you to group multiple files into a “.zip” file without having to download another app for it. Until now, Files by Google allowed you to extract zip files without problems. However, you had to turn to other tools if you wanted to create a zip. This can be quite inconvenient for those who need to constantly create and decompress zip files. Those particular users probably preferred to move to another tool from which they could do both tasks.
Regarding the “Add to collection” option, it will allow you to pin your favorite folders in the Collection tab. The latter is visible as soon as you open Files by Google. So, access to those folders will be much faster and easier. According to the report, the option will only work with folders, so you will not be able to pin individual files.
Also, Google may make slight placement changes to tabs in upcoming Files by Google app updates. In the latest beta, the “Collection” tab is now above the “Categories” one. Lastly, it’s noteworthy that it is not certain that all the options in testing will reach the stable version. However, if implemented, they will make Files by Google an even more useful tool.
