Xiaomi has announced its new flagship smartphones, the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro. Those two phones got announced in China only, though, but the global launch is expected to follow in Q1 2022.
In any case, we know exactly what to expect for global models, thanks to this launch. The Xiaomi 12 Ultra wasn’t announced during the event, but the vanilla and ‘Pro’ models did, and they’re quite interesting.
The main differentiating point between the Xiaomi 12 & 12 Pro is the size
The two phones look basically the same, but they’re different in regards to the size. The Xiaomi 12 Pro is considerably larger than the Xiaomi 12, as the vanilla model is ideal for those of you who don’t want a huge phone.
The two phones are made out of metal and glass, though a variant with metal and vegan leather (PU leather) back has also been presented. Let’s hope that model will make it to the global markets, as it would offer some variety to consumers.
Both of these smartphones feature curved displays, and a centered display camera hole. Both feature very thin bezels, though not uniform bezels. Their back sides are also curved, while the rear camera module is placed in the top-left corner.
Both devices include three cameras on the back, and one on the front, though the cameras are not the same. The camera module itself does protrude a bit, and it does look somewhat unique, it’s not difficult to recognize, though it’s not flashy as the Pixel 6’s, or the Galaxy S21’s.
These two phones do have their similarities in the spec department as well, though they’re not the same. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 does fuel both phones, Qualcomm’s brand new flagship processor.
The Xiaomi 12 Pro has a larger, and sharper display
The Xiaomi 12 features a 6.28-inch fullHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The Xiaomi 12 Pro, on the other hand, includes a 6.73-inch QHD+ display, with a 120Hz refresh rate, and 480Hz touch sampling rate.
A 4,500mAh battery sits inside the Xiaomi 12, while the Xiaomi 12 Pro includes a 4,600mAh battery. The charging speeds are also different, the vanilla model supports 67W wired charging, while the ‘Pro’ model offers 120W wired charging. Both devices do support 50W wireless charging, though.
The camera setups are different, but quite powerful
The Xiaomi 12 has 50, 13, and 5-megapixel cameras. Wide, ultrawide, and macro cameras, that are different than the ones on the Xiaomi 12 Pro. The Xiaomi 12 Pro includes three 50-megapixel units, wide, ultrawide, and telephoto cameras, but it does have a macro mode thanks to the ultrawide camera. More on that in the spec sheet article. A 32-megapixel front-facing camera is included in the package, in both smartphones.
Android 12 comes pre-installed on both smartphones, with MIUI 13. You can get more information about their specs in our dedicated Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro specification articles. That being said, the Xiaomi 12 pricing in China starts at CNY3,699 ($580), while the 12 Pro pricing starts at CNY4,699 ($738).
If Xiaomi plans to do the same thing as last year, the Xiaomi 12 Pro may not make it to the global market. Xiaomi may opt to launch the Xiaomi 12 Ultra instead, though, alongside the Xiaomi 12.
There is still no word on the global launch, but Xiaomi is almost certainly planning that for the first quarter of 2022.
