Samsung is planning to announce three Galaxy S22 smartphones in Q1 next year. Those three devices are the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra. Despite the fact some rumors claimed these phones may offer different names, that won’t happen. The Galaxy S22 Ultra may be a replacement for the Note series, but it will launch under the Galaxy S series brand. That being said, in this article, we’ll take a look at the base Galaxy S22 model, we’ll preview it, in a way.

Down below, you’ll be able to read more about the Galaxy S22. A lot of information surfaced in the last couple of months, so we’ll try to sum it up below. You should be able to get a good idea as to what to expect out of this smartphone. All three of Galaxy S22 handsets will be flagship-grade, though the Galaxy S22 will be the most affordable of the bunch. Still, many of you may prefer this smartphone, read on to find out more.

This article will be regularly updated with new information on the Galaxy S22 (this is a preview article) — both official teasers and credible leaks, rumors, and insider claims — as it becomes available in the run-up to the release of the upcoming Android smartphone. The last update was made on December 27.

The Galaxy S22 will look similar to its predecessor

The Samsung Galaxy S22 will ship with a frame made out of metal. Its rear camera housing will extend from that frame, and it will also be made out of metal. This design is actually quite similar to the one we’ve seen with the Galaxy S21 series. Having said that, we’re not sure what material will Samsung use on the back of this phone. It will utilize either flat plastic or glass. If it ends up doing the same thing as last year, we’re in for a plastic backplate, but if a recent rumor is to be believed, we’ll get glass on the back of this handset.

The phone will include a 6.06-inch flat display on the front, and very thin bezels, as you can see in CAD-based renders in the gallery below. A display camera hole will be included here, and it will be centered. Samsung opted against under-display cameras this time around. The phone’s rear-camera housing will protrude a bit, while an LED flash will sit next to it. Samsung’s branding will, of course, be included on the back. A 3.5mm headphone jack won’t be a part of the package, nor will a microSD card slot. The main speaker will be bottom-firing, and will sit next to a Type-C USB port.

At least five color variants are expected, maybe more

All of the phone’s physical buttons will be included on the right-hand side, with the power / lock key below the volume rocker buttons. The Galaxy S22 will likely be quite light considering its size, and the plastic backplate that will likely be included. The phone is tipped to measure 146 x 70.5 x 7.6mm. It will, for sure, weigh considerably less than 200 grams. If a rumor is to be believed, it will weigh only 167 grams. The Galaxy S22 is expected to arrive in five color options, black, gold, green, pink, and white. A separate rumor claims seven different color options are coming, including white, black, green, rose gold, blue, gray, and beige color iterations.

Even a short video of Galaxy S22 series dummies surfaced, giving us a good look at all three devices. Do note that the rear cameras likely won’t protrude as much, as they will be flush with the camera housing.

It will include a smaller display & battery than the Galaxy S21

The Samsung Galaxy S22 will be quite a compact smartphone, in comparison to the competition, at the very least. The phone will feature a 6.06-inch display, based on rumors. That display will be slightly smaller than the panel on the Galaxy S21, while it will also be a bit wider (19.3:9 vs 20:9 on the Galaxy S21). This will be a flat AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, with either fullHD+ or QHD+ resolution.

Both Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 & Exynos 2200 models are coming

The phone will ship in two SoC variants. One model will be fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, while the other is expected to include Samsung’s Exynos 2200 SoC. This will be the company’s first SoC with an AMD GPU, by the way. The phone is expected to include 8GB of RAM, though a 12GB RAM model may become available as well. It will arrive in several different storage options.

A 3,700mAh battery will likely be included

In regards to the battery, it will be smaller than the unit on the Galaxy S21. The Galaxy S22 is said to include a 3,700mAh battery. Its more power-efficient SoC, and slightly smaller display should counter the smaller battery capacity.

Speaking of the battery, the Galaxy S22 is also expected to offer slower charging. The phone is expected to offer 25W fast wired charging. It will also support wireless charging, though we’re not sure how fast will it be. It’s possible Samsung will stick to 15W. Reverse wireless charging will also be supported, and do note that the phone will ship without a charging brick. So, you’ll need to buy one, if you don’t own it already.

IP68 certification is expected

The device will offer IP68 certification for water and dust resistance. It will also support HDR10+ content, and Samsung will likely include Gorilla Glass Victus protection for the display. Bluetooth 5.2 is also expected to be a part of the package, while the phone will support 5G connectivity, of course.

A new 50-megapixel camera is expected to sit on the back

The Samsung Galaxy S22 will feature improvements to its rear camera hardware, but the same cannot be said for the selfie camera. According to reports, the device will feature a new 50-megapixel main camera. This will be the company’s very own ISOCELL GN5 camera sensor, which offers a 1.0um pixel size. It also offers Dual Pixel Pro autofocus tech, and utilizes 2×2 pixel binning to capture 12.5-megapixel images. This sensor also offers 8K video recording at 30 fps, and 4K video recording at up to 120 fps. The Galaxy S22 is reported to have an f/1.8 aperture lens combined with that sensor.

A telephoto camera will also be included, likely a 10-megapixel one with 3x optical zoom (1um pixel size, f/2.4 aperture lens). The third camera slot on the back is reserved for an ultrawide camera. A 12-megapixel camera is tipped, which hides a 1/2.55-inch sensor, and an f/2.2 aperture lens. This camera will offer 1.4um pixel size, allegedly.

Samsung will reuse an old 10-megapixel camera sensor

Now, in regards to the phone’s front-facing camera, we won’t see much improvement here. Samsung is rumored to use the same 10-megapixel camera from the Galaxy S21. The company has been using that camera sensor for several generations now, and it still seems to trust it to do its job. This camera is still quite decent on the Galaxy S21, but it’s not the best in the market.

Another thing worth noting is that Samsung is not partnering with Olympus. Many smartphone OEMs partnered with dedicated camera companies, Huawei with Leica, OnePlus with Hasselblad, Vivo with ZEISS, and so on. Samsung was rumored to partner up with Olympus for the Galaxy S22 series, but that’s not happening.

The Galaxy S22 will launch in early February, it seems

The Samsung Galaxy S22 series is expected to launch in early February. Based on the latest report from a reputable source, all three phones will become official on February 8. The launch event is expected to kick off at 10 AM EST / 7 AM PST / 4 PM CET. Pre-orders are expected to kick off that very same day, while all three phones will go on sale on February 18, if this information is to be believed. Do note that a recent rumor suggested the launch may be slightly moved.

It could be more expensive than the S21

The Galaxy S22 could be more expensive than the S21. In fact, a rumor that surfaced suggested that all three phones will be more expensive than their predecessors. So, what price are we looking at here? The rumor that surfaced suggested that we’ll see a $50 increase for the vanilla model and ‘Plus’, and a $100 bump for the Ultra model. That means that the Galaxy S22 could end up costing $849 when it goes on sale, as the Galaxy S21 was priced at $799 at launch.

On the flip side, another rumor stated that the Galaxy S22 series will keep the price tags of their predecessors, and that includes the Galaxy S22. So, the phone could end up costing $799. We’ll have to wait and see.
