For a while now, we’ve known that Avatar: The Last Airbender has been renewed for two additional final seasons and that filming would be underway sometime in Q3 2024. Now, via DGC and Knight Edge Media, we know that cameras will roll on September 16th, 2024.
Following the show’s renewal on March 6th, 2024, when Netflix confirmed the story of Avatar: The Last Airbender will be concluded with two additional seasons, work has been quietly ongoing for the forthcoming second season.
Indeed, we’ve already been confirmed of a behind-the-scenes switch regarding showrunners, and more recently, we learned that an open casting call had been issued for the role of Toph.
However, beyond a Q3 2024 filming start date, all has been quiet on when production will commence. That is until a recent update on the Director’s Guild of Canada’s website.
According to the new listing, filming will commence on Monday, September 16th, and continue on season 2 for at least six months into the new year. The current planned wrap date is slated for March 21st, 2025.
Of course, the big caveat is that filming schedules are highly subject to change and can begin and finish much later than initially planned.
Season 2 will have a new codename. As you may know, season 1 was filmed under the codename TRADE WINDS. Season 2 will be filmed under the codename DINER BEAR.
Knight Edge Media has also been speaking to sources and has reported that it will be less reliant (or ditching it entirely) for the forthcoming season. For those unaware, Avatar: The Last Airbender utilized a custom-built sound stage (technology pioneered by The Mandalorian and Netflix’s 1899).
According to The Verge, the first season was filmed with the cooperation of effects studio Pixomondo in a “custom-built facility 84 feet across, 28 feet high, features 23,000 square feet of stage and more than 3,000 LED panels.”
Knight Edge Media cites cost as one of the primary reasons for moving to more practical sets in Vancouver moving forward, adding that the first season was also criticized by some fans, with a common complaint being “many actors could not move freely due to its space limitations.”
