Sonic the Hedgehog 2 only released its new trailer last week, but a new teaser has joined the hype around The Matrix Resurrections.
There is nothing like jumping on a trend or bit of hype to promote a movie, and while all eyes this Christmas are on Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matrix Resurrections, it seems that someone is attempting to get in on the act by jumping on The Matrix bandwagon with a cheeky little homage. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 speeds into cinemas next year, and with the first trailer just arriving earlier this month, you would think that the film’s promotional team would be wracking their brains about how to compete with the two biggest movies of 2021, but it seems that instead, they have gone all out to join the current hype surrounding the release of Keanu Reeves’ belated return to The Matrix.
The latest teaser from the Sonic team mimics the green code on black background that has become synonymous with the Wachowski’s hit franchise, but along with the now-iconic symbols and letters are a whole load of little green and white rings that fade away to reveal the outline of our blue hero. We are then given an almost multiversal choice, to choose the red quill or the blue quill, as though in another universe this replaces the choice of Neo to take the red pill or the blue pill. As a bit of marketing, the whole thing has been magically timed and someone needs to take a bow.
Of course with this being Sonic, the colors are linked to the quills of the title hedgehog and his nemesis Knuckles, who will be providing some tough-looking muscle to Dr. Robotnic’s attempts to take over the world by harnessing the power of the Master Emerald. While the film is being set up with the pair as enemies, fans of the video games will no doubt be expecting the red echidna to have a change of allegiance by the end of the movie, but for now, it is still fun to ask the question of whose side would you be on?
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 sees the return of cast members of the original movie which became a massive hit as one of the final cinematic releases of 2020 prior to the arrival of the Covid pandemic in 2020. Gaining reasonably positive reviews from critics and a solid audience score, the $300 million-grossing movie managed to avoid the one-time certain failure that many video game adaptations have suffered over the years. However, with recent and upcoming films and TV series seeming to have finally worked out how to deliver a decent adaptation of a video game concept, Sonic probably arrived at just the right time to make an initial impact in cinemas and in homes during the lockdowns that followed soon after its release.
Ben Schwartz is back to voice Sonic for a second time, this time out being joined by Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey who voices that other fan-favorite Miles “Tails” Prower. The human cast is made up of Jim Carrey, back to ham it up as the evil Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore and Natasha Rothwell. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 arrives in cinemas on April 8th, 2022.
