With fans still turning out in droves to watch Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for Tom Holland’s next big release. The 25-year-old actor can next be seen on the big screen in Uncharted, an adaptation of the popular video game series that also stars Mark Wahlberg. You can check out the new trailer below, but be warned of a few tense moments for anyone afraid of heights.
The official synopsis for Uncharted reads: “Street-smart thief Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune lost by Ferdinand Magellan 500 years ago. What starts as a heist job for the duo becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Moncada (Antonio Banderas), who believes he and his family are the rightful heirs. If Nate and Sully can decipher the clues and solve one of the world’s oldest mysteries, they stand to find $5 billion in treasure and perhaps even Nate’s long-lost brother…but only if they can learn to work together.”
Uncharted is directed by Ruben Fleischer. Based on a screen story by Rafe Judkins, the script is written by Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway. Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner, and Ari Arad produced. Executive producers include Ruben Fleischer, Robert J. Dohrmann, David Bernad, Tom Holland, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Neil Druckmann, Evan Wells, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway. Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Antonio Banderas also star opposite Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.
“When we went to set for the first time, I saw Mark Wahlberg [who plays mentor figure Sully], and Mark is massive. He is a unit,” Holland said of working with Wahlberg, per GamesRadar. “I was in good shape, but I wasn’t by any means big. We went home for five months, all I did was eat and train, eat and train, eat and train – to put a bit of timber on, to make me look not like a child next to Mark.”
On why he took on the role of Nathan Drake, the Spider-Man star added, “I’m always looking for a challenge. I’m looking for something I haven’t done before. I’m now using my job as an excuse to travel, and see the world, and meet amazing people. In a similar way to Nathan Drake, I really just like adventure.”
This is one of several major projects on the way based on popular PlayStation video games. Currently, HBO is filming a high-budget series based on The Last of Us, featuring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead roles. It was also announced that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie will play the lead role of John Doe in another series based on Twisted Metal. Outside of the Sony bubble, video game adaptations have proven to be quite lucrative as well, considering the immense success of Sonic the Hedgehog (which has its own sequel on the way as a result).
Uncharted is scheduled to be released in movie theaters by Sony Pictures on Feb. 18, 2022.
