Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has unveiled the trailer for his upcoming sci-fi short film, Night of the Cooters. Vincent D’Onofrio directs and stars in the film, which has been called a “labor of love” by Martin. Night of the Cooters is based on the eponymous 1987 short story by Howard Waldrop. The film was announced back in August when Martin announced in his blog that principal photography had wrapped and visual effects work was set to begin. Night of the Cooters employs an inventive visual style, blending live-action and animation to give the film a distinctive look. You can check out the trailer below.
The trailer opens with shots of a deserted town, soon revealing Vincent D’Onofrio as Sheriff Lindley. He teams up with his deputy and a couple of curious townsfolk to investigate a strange cylinder that’s crash landed in their town. The discovery soon turns into a fight for survival as the people of Pachuco, Texas, defend their home against aliens.
Night of the Cooters is written by Joe Lansdale (Bubba Ho-Tep) and stars Hopper Penn, Harrison Page, Martin Sensmeier, Cristin McCleary, Elias Gallegos, Luce Rains, Jazzy Kim O’Brien, and Darius Eteeyan. Author Howard Waldrop is also part of the project and serves as a producer alongside George R.R. Martin. The Game of Thrones author has described Waldrop as one of his favorite science fiction writers and has always wanted to adapt his short story, Night of the Cooters.
“Night of the Cooters is a short story, and our version is going to be a short film. I’d guess it will come in somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes, shot with a combination of live action and state-of-the-art animation. If you loved the story, we think you will love our movie.”
To be fair, Night of the Cooters does look amazing, and the visual style that it adopts is a rare sight these days. Richard Linklater’s 2006 drama A Scanner Darkly is one of the best examples of the rotoscope animation style. However, Night of the Cooters is made by Lumenscapes and Trioscope Studios, who utilize a different animation style. Let’s see what new ground Night of the Cooters breaks. The film doesn’t have a release date as of now; it is still in post-production. But if all goes well, Night of the Cooters will come out early next year – February or March. Being a short film, a wide theatrical release is out of the question, according to Martin. A streaming release is most likely for Night of the Cooters.
George R.R. Martin is currently busy writing the final two books in his Song of Ice and Fire series. He had promised in 2011 that the sixth book in the series, The Winds of Winter, would be completed in three years. Ten years have passed, and there is no word on when the book will release. In the meantime, Martin wrote a prequel, Fire & Blood, which chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen. A television adaptation, House of the Dragon, is coming to HBO in 2022 to fill the void left by Game of Thrones.
