STX Films has released the new trailer of its new film, National Champions, a fictional sports drama focusing on a protest raged by young athletes against team managers. The film focuses on two college athletes, football players eyeing for NFL selections in the future, who ignite a player’s strike three days before the national championship game. What follows is the efforts of the few college players to bring down an entire lineage of sports managers, executives, coaches, and profiteers in order to gain fair compensation and equal rights as other league players.
The trailer begins with star quarterback LeMarcus James (Stephen James) making a televised announcement on how he and his fellow college athletes are not offered payments under the pretense of them getting opportunities to play at the NFL. James points out how players who don’t make it to NFL and fall prey to financial difficulties, hampering their lives and livelihood. James then urge his fellow collegiates to join him in a strike against the National Collegiate Athletic Association and demand status as paid employees instead of college athletes. And in a blowing press announcement, James further ignites a war as he explicitly releases salary details of his coach and NCAA executives, rallying both support and threatful critique. Will James be able to withhold his stand against cash-mining sharks?
National Champions is a story of a few powerless but sheer-willed athletes standing up for their rights to receive fair compensation and National Champions plan on unraveling the systematic flaws in college sports management bodies. It’s about a college revolution making a stand against a coach and his management team who’s hell-bent on protecting its legacy. The trailer promises a compelling story powered by a talented ensemble. The film stars Stephen James (21 Bridges), J. K. Simmons (Whiplash), Alexander Ludwig (The Lone Survivor), Jeffery Donovan (Burn Notice), Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk).
The film is in fact executive produced by Russell Wilson, a former quarterback for Seattle Seahawks, who also briefly appears in the trailer. National Champions is being directed by Ric Roman Waugh who earlier directed Shot Caller (2017) that starred Nikolai Coster-Waldau. Distributed under STX films, the film has been adapted from Adam Mervis’ play of the same name and has been penned for the screen by Mervis himself. National Champions was released in theaters on December 10, two weeks after it was delayed from its original release.

Three days before the college football national championship game, star quarterback LeMarcus James (Stephan James) and teammate Emmett Sunday (Alexander Ludwig) ignite a player’s strike declaring they won’t compete until all student-athletes are fairly compensated. With billions of dollars at risk and legacies on the line, the stakes could not be higher. Now, with only hours until kickoff, the head coach (J.K. Simmons) and various power brokers (Lil Rel Howery, Tim Blake Nelson, Andrew Bachelor, Jeffrey Donovan, David Koechner, Kristin Chenoweth, Timothy Olyphant, Uzo Aduba) must race against the clock to protect or destroy the prevailing collegiate athletics system.
