X has changed its terms of service, and it now allows adult content on the site, as promised. There are a couple of rules put in place, though. You cannot use NSFW content in profile pictures and banners.
Adult content is now officially allowed on X
That’s not a huge limitation, of course. The company will allow users to “share consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior”. It needs to be labeled as adult content, though.
This change was spotted by TechCrunch. Not long after that, @Safety account sent out a confirmation by saying: “We have launched Adult Content and Violent Content policies to bring more clarity of our Rules and transparency into enforcement of these areas. These policies replace our former Sensitive Media and Violent Speech policies – but what we enforce against hasn’t changed”.
NSFW content wasn’t technically banned thus far, at least not explicitly
Now, some of you have probably noticed some NSFW content on X thus far. X didn’t exactly ban porn. Some X Premium users used a pay-to-view format in order to share adult content already. Yes, that’s similar to what OnlyFans is doing, but on X.
Adult content creators can now technically use X to promote themselves and their work with X’s blessing. Do note that X will require users who “regularly post” adult content to adjust their settings in order to mark the images and videos they post as sensitive content.
Users need to be 18 years of age in order to see adult content, of course
X was also clear that its adult content rules apply to all content, regardless of whether it is real, AI-generated, or animated. Users who aren’t 18 years of age cannot see NSFW content by default, of course.
Another rule worth noting is that the new rules ban content “promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors”. That’s a given, though.
That’s basically it. X is now looking to compete with OnlyFans even, perhaps, as some adult content creators may try their luck on X as well. The company is probably hoping this will increase its revenue over time, that’s just a wild guess, though.
