This time around we’ll be comparing two camera powerhouses. We’ll compare the OPPO Find X7 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 VI. Both of these smartphones launched this year, though the Xperia 1 VI is technically newer, as it arrived earlier this month. The OPPO Find X7 Ultra launched back in January. Still, both smartphones belong in the same generation, technically, and it will be interesting comparing them.

These two phones are quite different, ranging from their design to camera output. Do note that the OPPO Find X7 Ultra did not launch in a global variant, unlike the Xperia 1 VI. Still, once the Google Play Store is installed, it works as intended, in case you want to import it. We’ll first compare the specifications of the two phones, and will then move to their designs, displays, performance, battery life, camera performance, and audio output.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 VI: Design

Both of these phones utilize aluminum for their frames, but their backs are different. Sony’s flagship has glass on the back, while OPPO’s combines glass with vegan leather. In fact, two thirds of its backplate is covered by vegan leather. The OPPO Find X7 Ultra does add more grip to the table because of this. All the physical buttons sit on the right-hand side of both phones. The volume up and down buttons are placed above the power/lock key. The Sony Xperia 1 VI also has a shutter key on the right, while OPPO has an alert slider on the left.

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra has a centered display camera hole at the top of its display. The phone’s bezels are very minimal, and the display is curved. The Sony Xperia 1 VI has a flat display, and no display camera hole or notch. It has thicker top and bottom bezels, though. There is also an audio jack at the top of the Xperia 1 VI. The frame on the device is flat, and raised from the rest of the phone. The OPPO Find X7 Ultra doesn’t have a flat frame. Its front and back sides curve into the frame proportionally.

You’ll also notice considerably different camera islands on the back. The OPPO Find X7 Ultra has a circular camera module with four cameras on the inside. The Xperia 1 VI has three vertically aligned cameras on the back, in the top-left corner. The OPPO Find X7 Ultra does have a larger display, and it’s a bit taller and wider than the Xperia 1 VI. It’s also thicker and heavier. It weighs 221 grams, compared to 192 grams of the Xperia 1 VI. Both smartphones offers an IP68 certification for water and dust resistance.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 VI: Display

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra includes a 6.82-inch QHD+ (3168 x 1440) LTPO AMOLED display. That display is curved, and it can project up to 1 billion colors. It has an adaptive refresh rate (1-120Hz), and Dolby Vision support is also included. HDR10+ content is supported, and the theoretical maximum display brightness is set at 4,500 nits. The screen-to-body ratio is at around 90%, and the panel is protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

The Sony Xperia 1 VI, on the other hand, has a 6.5-inch fullHD+ (2340 x 1080) LTPO OLED display. It also has an adaptive refresh rate (1-120Hz), and HDR support. This panel can also project up to 1 billion colors. The display aspect ratio is 19.5:9, while the screen-to-body ratio is around 86%. The Gorilla Glass Victus 2 from Corning is placed on top of this display in order to protect it.

Both of these displays are really good, great even. They are vibrant, offer great viewing angles, and good touch response. The blacks are quite deep on both of them. The OPPO Find X7 Ultra does have several advantages, though. It is not only brighter of the two panels, and the difference is noticeable, but it’s also sharper. That’s not something many people will notice, though. The OPPO Find X7 Ultra’s panel also has a higher PWM dimming in order to protect your eyes.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 VI: Performance

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 from Qualcomm sits inside both of these smartphones. That is the company’s most powerful processor, and one of the best chips these two companies could have chosen. OPPO’s handset combines that chip with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and UFS 4.0 flash storage. The Xperia 1 VI includes 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and UFS 4.0 flash storage. Sony’s phone also offers storage expansion, by the way.

Both of these phones offer stellar performance. You do need to sideload Google Play Store on the OPPO Find X7 Ultra first, but once you do, the phone does a great job with performance despite the fact it’s made for the Chinese market. Both phones fly through regular, everyday tasks, and then some. They can multitask like nobody’s business, and do more intense tasks too, if that’s what you need.

There is a difference on the gaming side of things, though. As long as the games are not extremely demanding, they’re both on the same playing field. With the demanding games, however, the Xperia 1 VI does tend to throttle both CPU and GPU. That’s not something most people will notice on the performance side of things, but just keep it in mind. The phone probably does that to keep the heat in check. As I said, though, chances are you won’t even notice it during your gameplay, but it does start happening rather soon after you fire up a demanding game.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 VI: Battery

There is a 5,000mAh battery included inside the OPPO Find X7 Ultra. The Sony Xperia 1 VI comes with that very same battery capacity, actually. Both of these phones offer great battery life, but the Xperia 1 VI does push a bit further than the OPPO Find X7 Ultra. It’s tough to predict everyone’s battery life with phones, as everyone’s usage is different, and that’s only one of the parameters.

Let’s just say that both of these phones are capable of going past 7 hours of screen-on-time, as long as you’re not running games in that period, or other extremely demanding tasks. The Xperia 1 VI does have more juice in the tank, which is noticeable, and can go the distance if you need it to. It has a smaller display, and a less sharp one, so that has something to do with it for sure. Sony’s optimization comes into play too, of course.

When it comes to charging, however, the OPPO Find X7 Ultra is the clear winner. It supports 100W wired, 50W wireless, and 10W reverse wireless charging. The Sony Xperia 1 VI supports 30W wired, 15W wireless, and 5W reverse wireless charging. OPPO’s flagship even comes with a charger and a charging cable in the box. The Sony Xperia 1 VI does offer either of those, you’ll have to buy them separately.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra vs Sony Xperia 1 VI: Cameras

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra has four cameras on the back, while the Sony Xperia 1 VI has three. OPPO’s handset includes sa 50-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide unit (123-degree FoV), a 50-megapixel telephoto camera (2.8x optical zoom), and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera (6x optical zoom). The Xperia 1 VI, on the flip side, has a 48-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera (123-degree FoV), and a 12-megapixel telephoto unit (3.5x-7.1x continuous optical zoom).

Both of these phones do a great job in terms of camera performance, but the results are different. The Sony Xperia 1 VI is the one that tries to keep things closer to real life, while the OPPO Find X7 Ultra does the same but with a bit more contrast thrown into the mix. The images from the OPPO Find X7 Ultra look great straight out of the camera, and the phone really excels in HDR conditions. Both phones do provide well-balanced and detailed photos during the day.

Something similar happens in nighttime conditions. OPPO provides a bit more contrasty shots in low light too, but they look outstanding with great colors. The Xperia 1 VI is not doing a bad job either, quite the contrary. It also handles light sources without a hitch. These two phones provide different photos, but both are great in their own way. We did prefer telephoto shots from the OPPO Find X7 Ultra most of the time, and the same goes for ultrawide ones, although the Xperia 1 VI was not far behind.

Audio

Both of these smartphones come with a set of stereo speakers. They are somewhat similar in terms of loudness, and yes, they’re plenty loud. There’s also no distortion to speak of, and they’re very well balanced too.

The Xperia 1 VI has the advantage of the audio jack, though. It’s located at the top of the phone. You can still connect your wired headphones to the OPPO Find X7 Ultra, but you’ll need to use the Type-C port at the bottom. Bluetooth 5.4 is supported on both phones.
