At the Netflix Upfront, Netflix unveiled a brand new 8-episode hour-long drama series with 1883 (part of the Yellowstone universe) actor Tim McGraw set to lead.
The series was developed under the working title Ragdoll, although Netflix didn’t officially announce its name at the Netflix Upfronts.
Skydance is the studio behind Netflix’s series, and it has previously worked with Netflix on FUBAR (currently heading into its second season) and Grace and Frankie. They’re also the animation studio behind a slew of upcoming Netflix movies. McGraw’s Down Home banner is producing who has the backing of Skydance.
Brandon Camp serves as the creator and writer of the project. He most recently worked on Netflix’s Love & Gelato, released in 2022, and before that teamed with Netflix on Benji. Taylor Elmore will serve as co-showrunner and executive producer.
The series will take place in the competitive bull-riding world in Texas. It’ll follow a megastar rodeo champion facing a crossroads in his life. He is facing a new challenge with a new up-and-coming hotshot who is absolutely fearless and threatens his well-established ways after a secret comes to light.
McGraw is on board to play the role of Aaron Tealey, the rodeo champion. Other characters in the series include Jeff Tealey, Aaron’s father, who wants to help and support Gloria. Gloria Soto is the bull-riding amateur described as a rebellious teen. We then have Gloria’s mother, Naomi, and Viktor Ascher, a bull-riding business rival, backing Gloria and his brother Karl. Harry Choi will be Aaron’s agent.
Tim McGraw is perhaps best known for his role as a country singer and songwriter but has ventured into acting throughout his career, working on titles like Friday Night Lights, The Kingdom, and most recently, 1883 (as well as appearing in the flagship Yellowstone).
Other actors will be revealed further down the line.
The project follows a recent trend of Netflix attempting to follow the blueprints of success laid down by the likes of Yellowstone. This year, we’ll see American Primeval released, and the creator of Sons of Anarchy is currently filming The Abandons for Netflix.
When will the new Tim McGraw series be on Netflix?
Production on the series is expected to take place in Canada sometime between August and September 2024, suggesting a mid-to-late 2025 release.
