Samsung‘s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are the most durable foldable smartphones yet. The company has been frequently reminding the world of this fact ever since their launch in August. It has showcased the durability improvements on the new phones on several occasions over the past few months. The Korean giant has now released yet another video (attached at the end of the article) highlighting the durability of the two foldables.
Both Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 come with an IPX8 rating for water resistance. Meaning, they can survive under 1.5m deep water for up to 30 minutes. In day-to-day use, the phones should withstand splashes of fresh water, a few minutes under the rain, or an accidental drop in the water.
This is the first time for a foldable smartphone to feature an official IP (ingress protection) rating for water resistance. That’s a pretty big deal and Samsung understandably can’t stop talking about it. Surely not when an upcoming foldable from a rival firm is attracting a lot of attention. Perhaps Samsung published the latest promotional video to keep its foldables in the news.
Besides being water-resistant, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 can also better withstand shocks and drops than the previous-gen models. Samsung has used Gorilla Glass Victus on both front and back to protect the phone’s outer surface from scratches. Additionally, the frame is made of Armor Aluminum, the strongest aluminum material used in smartphones today. Armor Aluminum also protects the housing surrounding the hinge on both models.
While the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 cannot entirely stop fine particles of dust from entering the phone, an enhanced Sweeper technology is employed inside the hinge to keep dust away.
Galaxy Z Fold 3, Flip 3 also feature an improved foldable display
Owners of foldable smartphones like Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 have one more major concern: is it safe to repeatedly fold and unfold the device? Samsung says the foldable display on its latest offerings can withstand folding 200,000 times, which should be more than enough to last throughout the life span of the devices. The company has used Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) with an additional layer of protective film to ensure the longevity of the screen.
All in all, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 are a lot more durable than their predecessors. Perhaps more durable than any other foldable device available currently. You can see Samsung putting the two phones through rigorous durability tests here.
