Using an Apple Watch for Android gaming isn’t a string of words I thought I would ever be typing, but here we are. In this weird world of tech advancements, there are all sorts of zany projects people set their minds to. Truthfully, putting Android on an Apple watch to play Android games may not be the strangest way people have come up with to play games. Either way, this is certainly not a common method of gaming and that’s precisely what makes it so intriguing.
Posted to Reddit this week and spotted by Android Police and Wccftech, a user who goes by u/R3V3RB_7 has created an unlikely portable gaming device. An Apple Watch Ultra running Android and strapped to a wireless Bluetooth controller. The setup uses a knockoff DualSense controller and the watch is fastened around the touchpad. So the display of the watch ends up sitting right in the middle between the joysticks, d-pad, and action buttons.
Judging from the video it doesn’t seem like the most practical setup for a few reasons. For one, the display on the watch, while big compared to other smartwatches, is quite small for gaming. The watch case is also big enough that it’s in the way of the right joystick. This appears to be shoving the joystick to the bottom right, which you would think would hinder gameplay. But it doesn’t look like that’s the case. In fact, things seem to work just fine. The d-pad is being used for movement and the action buttons work just fine. So it’s possible that the joystick has been disabled so as not to mess with the experience.
Android gaming on an Apple Watch, because you can
Most people who play games would probably agree that this doesn’t look like a very suitable way to play games. However, the fact that you can set this up is nothing if not cool. In the video shared to Reddit, the user has downloaded a Game Boy Advance emulator and is playing GBA games like Castlevania Aria of Sorrow. And the nature of retro games is that they usually don’t have too many input actions, so the four action buttons and a d-pad work just fine.
The controller also works for navigating the user interface on the watch. So there’s that. Also worth noting is that this doesn’t seem to be an actual Apple Watch. Android Police points out that it seems to be a knockoff as well, with some different board parts, while the whole thing runs a stripped-down version of Android.
The user doesn’t mention anything about how this was all put together or if it’s meant to be anything more than a fun project. Nevertheless, this is a neat idea and it’s always great to see unique creations like this.
