Apple plans to announce the iPhone 17 Pro next year, and it will include a 2nm SoC despite a recent earthquake. That chip will also fuel the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and it’s possible the vanilla models will also include it. It remains to be seen.
The 2nm SoC for the iPhone 17 Pro seems to be coming on time despite the recent earthquake
In any case, TSMC is tasked with manufacturing this processor, in case you didn’t know. The thing is, Taiwan got hit by the strongest earthquake in the country’s history recently. It managed to damage almost 10,000 chip wafers in production.
In other words, hundreds of thousands of chips were lost in this earthquake. That managed to raise some questions when it comes to the upcoming 2nm SoC for the iPhone 17 Pro series.
Well, first of all, TSMC was in the middle of producing a low number of chips for testing purposes. The chip was not yet in mass production or anything like that. It is believed that TSMC won’t have any problems delivering that processing on time, despite everything.
The trial production for that 2nm processor is expected in the second half of this year. It will be followed by small-scale production in the second quarter of next year.
TSMC is counting on insurance money
Also, it’s worth noting that TSMC expects to pay for any damages done by the earthquake by insurance. Therefore, no current plans that the company has should be inflicted by the earthquake, at least not major plans.
It is worth noting that TSMC is also in the middle of setting up a new plant in Arizona, US. That will cost $65 billion to set up, so it’s very important for TSMC for everything to go smoothly on the insurance side of things.
All in all, this earthquake was devastating, but TSMC’s business seems to be on track overall. The same cannot be said for a ton of people who got affected by this earthquake, though.
