Hunter Schafer is making her way to theaters with her new horror film, Cuckoo. The movie is helmed by Tilman Singer, behind projects such as Luz, El Fin Del Mundo, and The Events At Mr. Yamamoto’s Alpine Residence. Cuckoo will be the director’s second crack at the horror genre after the 2018 project, Luz, which was generally well-received from critics but became forgettable with audiences. Nevertheless, the film won several awards across various festivals, including the horror features category at Austin Fantastic Fest, Best Picture at the Fractured Visions Film Festival, and the Fantastic Fest.

From NEON, Cuckoo will be released in theaters August 9, and you can watch the trailer above. The plot of the 35mm film has been kept under wraps, but is now fully revealed. You can read the synopsis below:

“Reluctantly, 17-year-old Gretchen leaves her American home to live with her father, who has just moved into a resort in the German Alps with his new family. Arriving at their future residence, they are greeted by Mr. Konig, her father’s boss, who takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen’s mute half-sister, Alma. Something doesn’t seem right in this tranquil vacation paradise. Gretchen is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family.”

In addition to the Euphoria actress, Cuckoo will feature Dan Stevens (Legion, Downton Abbey), Jessica Henwick (Love and Monsters), and Zita Hanrot (Love, Death + Robots). Singer has also written the film, with Thor Bradwell, Markus Halberschmidt, Ken Kao, Josh Roseumbaum, and Maria Tsigka producing. Jeff Deutchman, Ryan Friscia, Tom Quinn, and Emily Thomas serve as executive producers.

Hunter Schafer is Becoming a Big Name in Hollywood

Hunter Schafer made her acting debut as Jules in HBO’s Euphoria, a massive success. The series went on to win numerous Emmys and catapulted Schafer into the national spotlight. She would later co-write and co-executive produce a special episode for Euphoria, which would be nominated for Best Writing for a Drama Series at the International Online Cinema Awards.

Last year, she starred in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The feature film is based on the novel of the same name, written by Suzanne Collins. Schafer played Tigris Snow, cousin of lead Coriolanus Snow. The character appeared briefly in the original Hunger Games trilogy, however, she had a much more significant role in the prequel film.

Schafer will also star in Yorgos Lanthimos’ star-studded follow-up to Poor Things, the mysterious and stylish film Kinds of Kindness, along with an upcoming film titled Mother Mary.
