T-Mobile is testing a new dual SIM subscription. The service seems simpler to set up compared to T-Mobile’s DIGITS subscription and is cheaper too.

T-Mobile is offering a second line to customers in some markets. Though the service is under testing, it could offer a cheaper way to keep two SIMs operational with calls, messaging, and data on the same smartphone.

How does the new T-Mobile Dual SIM subscription work and how much it costs?

Dual SIM smartphones have become quite common. Moreover, manufacturers are now increasingly moving away from physical SIM cards, and have started offering eSIM functionality. The eSIM facility allows telecom companies and their subscribers to ditch the physical SIM, and instead, program the needed functions directly into the smartphone.

T-Mobile’s new dual SIM subscription heavily relies on eSIM technology. It needs smartphones that either have a single physical SIM and an eSIM, or two eSIMs.

According to The Mobile Report, T-Mobile testing its “Second Line” subscription in a few very select areas in the US. The new subscription commands a base price of $25/month.

The majority of T-Mobile subscribers can utilize their “Hybrid BAN” discount to bring the asking price down to $15/month. Subscribers who have been prudent with their autopay discount can snag the service for a mere $10/month.

How does the new subscription differ from DIGITS?

T-Mobile already offers a “DIGITS” subscription. The company has been allowing dual-SIM since 2017. The DIGITS subscription essentially offers two mobile numbers. Both the DIGITS numbers can access T-Mobile data services. However, the service mandates subscribers download and activate an app.

The new T-Mobile Second Line subscription does not require any app. Customers only need to have a dual SIM smartphone that has an eSIM facility and a “Dual Standby” feature.

It is important to note that the new subscription does not offer data access on the second T-Mobile number. However, subscribers do get calling and messaging services on both numbers.

It appears T-Mobile wants to allow two operational numbers on the same device. This would essentially allow subscribers to carry a single, dual SIM smartphone instead of two devices. Subscribers often keep two numbers to separate personal and professional calls.

T-Mobile is currently testing the new subscription in Seattle and South Florida. The telecom service provider has made it clear that only a few of its customer service representatives can add the new service to customer’s plans.

Needless to mention, T-Mobile can easily activate the new “Second Line” subscription across the country. Moreover, as it is simpler and easier to use the same, the company may dump its DIGITS subscription soon.
